The Bottom Line

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows definitely takes a cue from Grand Theft Auto, what with the sandbox-style game play, ethical dilemmas, and drug-slinging gangs.

Pros & Cons

    • Web slinging with the Wii Remote is a fun way to travel, at least at first.
    • Nonlinear game play lets you pick your story line.
    • Lots of ways to customize your character.
    • Fighting seemingly endless numbers of bad guys can get tedious, as can certain training exercises.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows plays like a stripped-down version of Grand Theft Auto—grittier and more grown-up than previous Spider-Man games, and with more freedom and better combat moves (but the same lousy graphics). Set in a sprawling New York City (that doesn't resemble Manhattan nearly as closely as GTA's Liberty City does), the game has Spidey busting up street gangs, fighting robots, and reporting to a series of bosses for new assignments. Don't want to accept an assignment? That's cool. Want to go uptown instead of downtown? No problem. Want to wear the black suit and blow up cars with passengers still in them? Go for it.

The Wii action of swinging from buildings and beating up bad guys is cool for a while, but it can get tedious if you aren't challenging yourself with new combat techniques.
