Nintendo's Wii Gets a New Game

THQ Nordic decided it was worth the extra work to launch Let's Sing 2019 on Nintendo's gen-before-last console. Clearly there's still a market for a console that's sold over 100 million units over the course of its lifetime.

The Wii was a huge success for Nintendo when it launched back in 2006. By the time the Wii U had launched and proved to be a complete disaster, the Wii had sold over 100 million units. That was in 2013, and five years later there still seems to be some life left in the non-HD console. At least, that's what THQ Nordic thinks.

As Nintendo Enthusiast reports, the Austrian video game publisher used Gamescom 2018 this week to confirm that Let's Sing 2019 (developed by Ravenscourt Games) will be launching not only on PS4 and Switch, but also on the Wii. It may sound crazy, but then it could pay off for the publisher.

Typically as consoles age, especially Nintendo consoles, the new games appearing for them start to appeal to younger audiences. With over 100 million Wii sold and singing and dancing games being some of the most popular released on the Wii, the question for THQ Nordic probably wasn't why? but why not?

By targeting the Wii, the publisher also cleverly targets Wii U owners as the newer console is backwards compatible. The hardware may be gathering dust, but parents seeing this new game appearing for sale may just dust it off to keep the younger members of the family entertained this holiday season (assuming it launches this year).

I hope we get to hear some sales figures after launch. If they are significant it could trigger more developers and publishers to consider targeting the Wii next year. For now, expect retailers to spend some time figuring out which section to put the Let's Sing 2019 cases in. They will certainly stand out next to the much smaller Switch game cases!
