Mario Paint, arguably the most creative Super NES game, is launching on modern Nintendo consoles and will support the Switch 2's innovative controls.
The handheld's Joy-Con controllers can be placed on a table or even your knee for mouse-like controls. The feature works in titles like Civilization VII, but for many, Mario Paint will be the first opportunity to try the new functionality.
Mario Paint is now available for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The entire original game is preserved here, including modes where you can color in scenes of your favorite Mario characters, a mini-game called Breakroom where you use a fly swatter to hit bugs, the ability to design your own creative scenes, and more.
You can make up to 15 game sprites that you can then add to scenes within Mario Paint. Even the music mode is here, where you can use iconic Mario sound effects to make your own songs to go over the top of scenes. It also includes quirky sound effect options like cats, babies, dogs, and geese to help you make unique music.
The game is also available on the original Switch, even though the console doesn't include mouse-like controls. Nintendo says you can plug in a “compatible USB mouse." It’s unclear which mice are compatible, though, so you may have to experiment to find the right option.
Nintendo has been leaning into the Switch 2's mouse-like controllers in its marketing materials. The next big game to use these controls is a sports game called Drag x Drive, where you play as wheelchair basketball players. It’s set for release on Aug. 14, 2025.
