Sony's PlayStation Now game streaming service may be adding a feature that allows you to bypass any lag by downloading the entire game to your PS4's hard drive before playing it.

As well as offering you physical and digital games to purchase, Sony runs the PlayStation Now streaming game service. It allows access to over 650 games pulled from the PS4, PS3, and PS2 libraries to be played streamed over the internet for a monthly fee on either PS4 or PC.

The problem with streaming games is, you need a reliable connection with a minimum speeds high enough to cope. Not everyone has that, so it looks as though Sony may be reacting by introducing the ability to download games from PS Now to play offline.

PS Now Download Game Option

The hint of a download feature being added to the service comes via Reddit. User satertek posted the image you see above of the PS Now menu, which clearly shows a "Download Game" option highlighted. Such a feature would only allow you to temporarily download the game and would stop working if your PS Now subscription ended. However, it does get around the connection problem.

If a download option is introduced, it would likely have a hard limit on how many PS Now titles you could have available locally at once. With PS4 games, you may only be able to have one at a time due to the size of the downloads. It's not uncommon to see 40-50GB games now.

Would downloads encourage more gamers to sign up for PS Now? That's unknown, but it would certainly remove one of the concerns those on poorer connections have. I think the bigger problem for Sony is how much PS Now costs. One month is $19.99, three months is $44.99 ($29.99 with PS Plus), and 12 months is $99.99. So even with the 12 month offer it's still over $8 per month for access.
