Netflix Hikes Prices on Top Plans

The Standard plan is going up $1 to $10.99 a month while the Premium plan is increasing $2 to $13.99 a month.

Bad news, Netflix members: prices are going up.

Netflix's most popular plan, Standard—which offers HD-quality streams and lets you watch on up to two devices at a time—is increasing $1 to $10.99 a month. The company's Premium plan, which offers Ultra HD quality and allows four concurrent streams, is getting a $2 price hike to $13.99 a month.

"From time to time, Netflix plans and pricing are adjusted as we add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience to help members find something great to watch even faster," Netflix told PCMag.

That original content is not cheap; CNN reports that Netflix is spending about $16 billion on these shows, movies, and specials.

Netflix also offers a Basic plan, which does not offer HD quality and allows just one stream at a time. That option will remain $7.99, as it has since it launched in the US in 2010.

The price hike goes into effect for new members in the US today. The change will roll out to existing US members "over the course of the next several months," Netflix said. The company will start alerting current subscribers about the price increase on Oct. 19 via email and notifications within the service.

"Members will be notified at least 30 days in advance, based on billing cycle, on when they will see the price change," Netflix said.

Netflix last raised prices in the US in October 2015 when its Standard subscription went from $8.99 to $9.99 for new members. Since then, the company has added a downloading feature, introduced interactive content, and announced a slew of new content.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes. 

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app. 

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth. 

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light. 

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
