Retail giant Amazon has filed to trademark "Amazon Pharmacy" in the UK, Australia, and Canada.

As reported by CNBC, the shopping giant filed a trademark on the 9th of January on intellectual property websites in the three countries, with the documents suggesting that Amazon could move into the surgical, dental, pharmaceutical, and veterinary spaces.

These developments will likely come from a company called 'Pillpack,' which Amazon purchased in 2018. Pillpack, now branded 'Pillpack by Amazon Pharmacy,' sorted medicines into personalized daily packets and delivered them directly to those signed up to its subscription.

Although filing a trademark doesn't necessarily mean that Amazon is going to go global any time soon, it does suggest that such a move is on the cards.

Amazon's entry into the UK health market is particularly controversial. Last year, the UK government allowed Amazon devices to access the National Health Service in order to give advice to people using its Alexa voice assistant.

It was then revealed by Privacy International that, as part of the deal, Amazon gained access to "all [NHS] healthcare information, including without limitation symptoms, causes, and definitions, and all related copyrightable content, data, information and other materials [the NHS] makes available to Amazon."
