The FTC isn't finished investigating Facebook. The commission is also probing the social network for antitrust violations.

The FTC notified the company about the antitrust investigation last month, according to Facebook's earnings report for the second quarter, which was published on Wednesday. No other details were given.

So far, the FTC hasn't commented on its antitrust probe into Facebook. But on the same day, the commission officially slapped the social network with a $5 billion fine for committing privacy violations with consumers' personal data.

The news also arrives a day after the Justice Department announced it was opening its own antitrust investigation into the biggest online platforms. No companies were named in yesterday's announcement, but the probe will almost certainly examine Facebook, in addition to Amazon and Google, which have all faced accusations of holding a monopoly over their sector of the internet industry.

The antitrust investigations occur when the public's trust in Facebook has plummeted amid the company's past privacy scandals and its control over consumers' data. The controversies have prompted critics, including presidential candidates and a past Facebook co-founder, to call on regulators to break up the social network, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp.

Despite the company's sinking reputation, Facebook continues to grow. In the second quarter, its monthly active user base was up 8 percent year-over-year, reaching 2.41 billion. The company's revenue in the three-month period also hit $16.8 billion, a 28 percent increase from a year ago.

Although the FTC hasn't commented on its antitrust probe into Facebook, the commission has given a few hints on how it might approach the investigation. In February, the FTC announced it was launching a task force specifically devoted to monitoring competition in the tech industry. Not only will the task force scrutinize anticompetitive conduct, but also mergers that've been made in the industry.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
