Jeff Bezos' Net Worth Tops $150B

At $150 billion, Jeff Bezos is the world's richest person by a long way. To help put his lead in perspective, the world's second richest person is Bill Gates, but he's worth $55 billion less than Bezos. Could he be the first to reach $200 billion?

For the longest time, the answer to the question "who is the richest person?" resulted in the same answer: Bill Gates. But more recently, the answer has been changing thanks to Bill Gates choosing to spend or give away some of his fortune combined with the meteoric rise of Amazon's Jeff Bezos.

This week, it looks as though the Bezos name is going to remain firmly in the top spot for most wealth as his fortune hit $150 billion. Gates has no chance of catching him unless Amazon faces some major disaster as Bezos is now worth $55 billion more than the second place billionaire (Bill Gates is currently worth $95.3 billion).

As Bloomberg reports, Bezos' net worth topped $150 billion earlier this week and just before Prime Day kicked off. Amazon's share price climbed to $1,841.95, although it has fallen since thanks to Amazon's website failing to cope with the demand Prime Day created.

Jeff Bezos has little to worry about, though. His net worth increased by $52 billion this year alone (in July 2017 he was worth $90.9 billion), suggesting he could become a lot richer yet and make it all but impossible for any other billionaire to catch him. We could have said that about Bill Gates in the past, though, and look what happened!
