Back in April, Cloudflare teased a mobile VPN app that doesn't suck. It's called Warp and was meant to be launched by July. Cloudflare kept us waiting a few months longer, but now Warp is available, and it's not the traditional VPN you may be expecting.

Warp exists to keep the data we send via our mobile devices secure. That's it! Cloudflare admits that Warp "from a technical perspective" is a VPN, but it's not like other VPNs that hide your identity online or offer access to geo-restricted content. Instead, Warp ensures your data remains secure as it travels across the internet, it also does this without slowing down your connection or draining your phone battery.

Cloudflare built Warp into its existing 1.1.1.1 mobile app for Android and iOS. If you're already using the app then an update is required to unlock access to Warp. Anyone downloading 1.1.1.1 from today can try it immediately. Apparently over two million people have been waiting for the launch, which is sure to be a good stress test of Warp as a service.

It's important to point out that Warp is a free service without any bandwidth caps or limitations. It actually costs Cloudflare money to run, but the company is also offering a premium version that's faster called Warp Plus. It costs $4.99 per month and it achieves the increased speed by directing your traffic over Cloudflare's private backbone called Argo rather than relying on the public internet.

Deciding whether Warp Plus is worth the price depends on how much you rely on your smartphone for accessing the internet and your existing security setup. Cloudflare claims that Plus improves speeds by an average of 30 percent. It's also possible to earn Warp Plus credit for free by getting other users to use Warp. Every referral earns you and the person referred 1GB of Warp Plus credit.
