Virgin Media has announced the launch of its 'Intelligent WiFi', an update to its Hub 3 router that will optimise your home's internet to get you faster speeds and a better connection.

The way it works is threefold: firstly, your router will start changing WiFi channels automatically to make sure that it's not getting interference from other routers in your neighbourhood.

Since all WiFi operates over a certain number of channels, having more devices on one channel will slow it down, Virgin says that the 300,000 optimisations per day the device will handle should mean you get faster speeds.

Secondly, your devices will now switch between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi frequencies to ensure that gadgets which can handle the higher frequency remain on it (and doesn't clog up bandwidth for gadgets that can't).

Finally, the new update also means that WiFi will be shared more evenly across older devices that can't meet modern speeds to improve connectivity across all your tech.

Virgin Media are also providing free WiFi boosters for the black spots in your house where the connection can't quite reach, as long as you're signed up to one of its Full House or VIP packages. You can get three of the boosters for free, which Virgin says should cover 99.99% of households, but more can be purchased for £3 a month extra.

You'll be able to detect these black spots through Virgin's 'Connect' app on iOS and Android, which shows which rooms have the best internet connectivity. You can also use it to manage devices which are connected to your network - turning them off remotely through the app.

The app will also show you local hotspots in your area, so Virgin Media customers will be able to get on public WiFi more easily, and provides help videos for setting up your internet connection.
