Severn Bridge, the main route for people travelling between England and Wales, was closed due to a man flying a drone from the top of the bridge.

Traffic on the M48 was stopped because of "concerns for welfare," police told the BBC. "Officers attended the M48 Severn Bridge at 08:10 this morning after concerns were raised for a man who appeared to have climbed one of the towers and was flying a drone off it."

The man flying the drone, who is reportedly in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance. He voluntarily came down from the 47m (154ft) high bridge after being spotted on security cameras. Highway England, the company that maintains England's motorways and major roads, said that "the incident was quickly spotted on our security cameras and reported to police and thankfully there was no injury or worse on this occasion."

This news comes just a few days after Gatwick airport was closed between the 19th and 21st of December when drones were flown near the runway, affecting approximately 1000 flights.

Among the regulations for flying a drone in the UK include stipulations that you must "you must keep the drone in your direct sight at all times while it is flying, so that you can ensure that it does not collide with anything, especially other aircraft."

Two people were arrested, but released without charge and the police have made no further arrests. Law enforcement has also said it is possible there was not actually a drone at all.
