The popularity of Clubhouse, an app that allows you to listen in on other people's live conversations and possibly even take part, meant competitors were inevitable. One of those competitors is Spotify, which has today launched its own take on the Clubhouse experience called Greenroom.

Spotify didn't start from scratch, instead opting to acquire Betty Labs, creators of the sports-focused Locker Room app. Since then, Spotify has been working on turning Locker Room into what is now officially called Greenroom. It's available on iOS and Android in over 135 markets.

Just like Clubhouse, Greenroom offers a live audio experience with the ability for any user to host or participate in a live room chat. It's possible to join Greenroom using existing Spotify login credentials, and Spotify has included the ability to record, "so you can complement your on-demand content with live conversations." There's also chat controls to ensure users can limit who participates when appropriate.

Right now it's possible to join a group, search for upcoming rooms, join a room, and create rooms. But Spotify is promising to continue evolving the format while also bringing "exciting new programming to the platform spanning music, culture, and entertainment topics in addition to the sports content Locker Room has been known for."

If you need an extra incentive to participate, Spotify is launching a Creator Fund to help live audio creators monetize their work. Once signed up, payments will be forthcoming base on consumption of your live content and how many people turn up in your rooms. Grow your listener base and your income will rise with it.
