With the S277HK ($699.99), Acer adds another reasonably priced 4K Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) monitor to its already impressive roster. Based on In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel technology, this gorgeous 27-inch model delivers accurate colors, good gray-scale performance, and a sharp, highly detailed image. It doesn't offer as many features as its sibling, the Acer B286HK, and it's a little more expensive, but the S277HK is an all-around better performer and is our Editors' Choice midrange UHD monitor.

Design and Features
The S277HK's 3,840-by-2,160 panel has a non-reflective, anti-glare coating and is housed in a glossy-white cabinet. With its bezel-free design and brushed-aluminum stand, it is easily one of the most stylish monitors we've seen. The cabinet is 4.4 inches thick and weighs 10.9 pounds. The rectangular stand has a mounting arm that is offset to the right, rather than dead center. You can tilt the panel 5 degrees forward and 15 degrees backward, but you can't adjust height, nor can you swivel or pivot the cabinet.

All of the I/O ports are around back, facing outward. Video inputs include a DisplayPort, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a DVI port. There's also an audio input and a headphone jack, but the S277HK does not offer any USB ports. The embedded speakers are typical for a monitor: They aren't very loud, and they lack bass. Included in the box are a Quick Start Guide and four cables (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, and audio). Acer covers the S277HK with a 3-year warranty on parts, labor, and backlight.

There are five function buttons and a Power switch mounted under the bottom trim. As with the Acer H257HU, the S277HK offers a nice mix of basic and advanced picture settings. Basic settings include Brightness, Sharpness, Color Temperature, and Gamma, and there's a Low Blue Light setting that you can enable to reduce blue light emissions which are thought to cause eyestrain. Advanced settings include 6-Axis Hue and 6-Axis Saturation settings that let you calibrate the panel to your exact specifications. There's also an sRGB mode. Picture presets include Standard, Graphics, Movie, ECO, and User modes.

Performance
The S277HK's IPS panel delivers accurate colors out of the box. As shown on the chromaticity chart below, red, green, and blue colors, represented by the colored dots, are all very closely aligned with their ideal CIE coordinates, represented by the boxes. In comparison, all of the Twisted Nematic (TN)-based midrange UHD monitors we've tested have minor trouble displaying accurate greens. As is the case with most quality IPS panels, colors appear rich and well saturated.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
