There are a decent amount of rugged smartphones on the market, and even some heavy-duty feature phones, but phablet users have had to settle for decidedly more delicate options—until now. The Kyocera DuraForce XD on AT&T ($448.99; 16GB) is an ultra-rugged phablet with a 5.7-inch display and a drop-friendly, waterproof build. It doesn't have the sharpest screen, and camera performance leaves room for improvement, but if you need a big mobile device that can stand up to extreme use, the DuraForce XD is your best bet.   

Design, Display, and Features

Rugged phones are always bigger and bulkier than their more vulnerable siblings, and the DuraForce XD is no exception. It measures 6.6 by 3.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 10.8 ounces. That's massive compared with standard phablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (6 by 3 by 0.3 inches; 6.3 ounces). But it doesn't seem quite as out of line compared with other rugged devices like the Sonim XP7 (5.39 by 2.84 by 0.82 inches; 10.2 ounces). That said, the XD will certainly weigh down your pocket.
