It's been nearly three years since Apple updated its entry-level iPhone, but big changes to Apple's long-in-the-tooth iPhone SE suddenly look more certain. Rumors have been swirling that Apple is on the cusp of releasing a new version of the iPhone SE, called the iPhone SE 4. Now, it appears that we’ve gotten our first real look at the yet-to-be-released device.

Leaker Majin Bu posted photos and videos of what he alleges to be the new iPhone SE on his X account on Jan. 25.

The videos show a small phone with an Apple logo, a single camera module on the back, and a USB-C port for charging on the bottom. There appears to be a small selfie camera on the front. The images suggest the phone will lack the Dynamic Island found across the iPhone 15 and 16 lineup, though it's hard to say definitively based on the video since the phone is not powered on.

Existing rumors suggest the new iPhone SE will eliminate the outdated home button in favor of Face ID for security purposes and upgrade the screen from a 16:9 design to an edge-to-edge display. Based on the leaked video, all of those predictions appear to be in store for the forthcoming device.

The majority of the phone's specs remain uncertain. Bloomberg suggests the phone will ship with support for Apple Intelligence, which means it will most likely include a significant processor and memory boost. Rumors also point to the iPhone SE gaining an OLED display, which would be a welcome upgrade. Whether or not the iPhone SE 4 upgrades to the latest 5G radios, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth remains unknown.

Apple last updated the iPhone SE in March 2022 for $429. How soon will we see the iPhone SE 4? If Apple decides to announce the SE 4 in the same month as it did with the SE 3, we may see it as soon as March or April.

My Experience

I’m a mobile writer at PCMag, which means I cover wireless phones, plans, tablets, ereaders, and a whole lot more. I’ve written countless reviews and have appeared in numerous videos discussing the latest technology. I’ve always loved it and have been forming opinions on consumer electronics since childhood. Prior to joining PCMag, I covered TVs and home entertainment at CNET, served as the tech and electronics reviews fellow at Insider, and began my career by writing laptop reviews as an intern at Tom's Hardware. I am also a professional actor with credits in film, television, and theater, and membership in both SAG-AFTRA and Actors' Equity Association.

The Technology I Use

I’ve been an Apple fan for a long time. I use an iPhone 14 Pro, and I don’t plan to upgrade any time soon. I like to hold on to my phones for a few years. Maybe I'll upgrade if Apple sells a flip phone.

I use two different Apple computers in my daily life. I recently bought a maxed-out 15-inch MacBook Air for work and other activities. Despite my brand-new computer, I can’t quit using my 2012 MacBook Pro. It still works flawlessly and houses my large collection of ebooks. When traveling, I often use my 10.5-inch iPad Pro and Logitech keyboard case for streaming television and light internet use.

But my favorite piece of tech is my Kindle Paperwhite. I use it every day and it comes with me wherever I go. I read both physical and digital books, but the Paperwhite is currently my favorite ereader.
