MediaTek recently introduced a new chip for premium smartphones, the Dimensity 8400. Like the flagship Dimensity 9400, the 8400 is built to handle AI while offering improved performance and lower power consumption than its predecessor.

The Dimensity 8400 incorporates MediaTek’s Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), enabling developers to build apps that use AI to anticipate and respond to user needs. The DAE also allows for on-device video generation. MediaTek claims the 8400 offers the most powerful generative AI in its class.

Its neural processing unit supports a range of AI models, including large language models, small language models, and large multi-modal models. This allows the chip to perform tasks such as contextual replies, translations, and writing on-device without needing to rely on the cloud.

MediaTek's Dimensity 8400 features an eight-core Arm Cortex-A725 CPU, running at speeds of up to 3.25GHz. The chip uses an All Big Core architecture, which delivers 41% better multi-core performance and 44% lower peak power consumption compared with its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300, according to the company.

Gaming performance is also stepped up. The Dimensity 8400 features an Arm Mali-G720 GPU, which offers 24% higher peak performance and 42% improved power efficiency compared with the 8300. The GPU reduces memory bandwidth usage by 30%, extending battery life. MediaTek's Frame Rate Converter and Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 are also on board for smooth and responsive gameplay.

For content creators, the Dimensity 8400 features the MediaTek Imagiq 1080 image signal processor (ISP). This allows for better all-around images thanks to more accurate and faster focusing with increased light capture. Additionally, HDR video recording is supported at all zoom levels.

The first smartphones powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 have already been announced, starting with the Xiaomi Redmi Turbo 4. More devices from other manufacturers are expected to follow soon.

My Experience

I've been into technology for as long as I can remember. As a PCMag mobile writer, I get to test the newest phones and tablets. Since you rely on our buying advice, I make sure you get everything a manufacturer claims, which means lots of testing. This is your phone we're talking about; it's like a part of you. I've covered technology as a career for around two decades (yikes, I had to think about that). You've seen my work at The Apple Blog, PCMag (from my first go around), This Week in Tech, and CNET. I also occasionally produce independent video projects, including This Old Nerd, a how-to series that shows practical ways to get the most from your tech.

The Technology I Use

I use a 2023 M3 MacBook Pro customized with lots of keyboard shortcuts thanks to Raycast. Pixelmator Pro is my go-to photo editing application because there is no subscription, and I'm trapped with Evernote because I've used it forever.

I'm between phones at the moment, but I use a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 now, and used a Z Fold 6 before that. Considering that I like to have multiple windows open at once, the large inner screen of folding phones can show a baseball game on the top while I keep a chat app and Reddit open beneath. I do miss being able to write on the Z Fold 7's screen, though, which has me eyeing a Galaxy S25 Ultra.

My home is semi-smart, with many Google Home products that I thoroughly enjoyed in the pre-Gemini days. Be warned: smart bulbs are a gateway drug into smart home life.
