MediaTek's latest system on a chip (SoC), the Dimensity 8300, is coming to "premium 5G smartphones" by the end of this year. Earlier this month, MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9300 for top-tier Android smartphones and tablets. Based on the naming convention, we expect the Dimensity 8300 to be in phones priced in the $500-$700 range.

Lots More Power

This SoC comes with eight cores; four ARM Cortex-A715 cores and four Cortex-A510 cores. MediaTek claims the 8300 is 20% faster and 30% more power efficient than the previous generation, the MediaTek Dimensity 8200.

As is all the rage these days, the MediaTek 8300 is ready for generative AI and has an APU 780 AI processor integrated into the chip, which uses the same architecture as can be found in the higher-tier Dimensity 9300. This will let developers build apps that use large language models and Stable Diffusion to generate images.

This should help with photography and video with the option to capture 4K60 HDR. Additionally, thanks to that increased power efficiency, devices with the MediaTek 8300 will be able to record longer videos (overheating issues can limit video length).

MediaTek is also touting the 8300's gaming performance, saying that it offers 60% better performance while improving power efficiency by 55% compared to the last generation.

Plenty of Speed

A 5G modem is onboard the Dimensity 8300 and will support download speeds of up to 5.17Gbps. For comparison, the Dimensity 9300 can handle speeds up to 7Gbps The company also says that it's improved 5G power efficiency by 20% compared to the 8200, which should let you access mobile networks longer than before.

The 8300 also comes with Wi-Fi 6E (but not the newer Wi-Fi 7). On top of that, the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 can handle read/write speeds up to 100% faster than the 8200, so accessing apps and files should be a breeze.

MediaTek has yet to disclose its launch partners but since the year wraps up in a few weeks, expect the first Dimensity 8300-powered devices to be announced soon.

My Experience

I've been into technology for as long as I can remember. As a PCMag mobile writer, I get to test the newest phones and tablets. Since you rely on our buying advice, I make sure you get everything a manufacturer claims, which means lots of testing. This is your phone we're talking about; it's like a part of you. I've covered technology as a career for around two decades (yikes, I had to think about that). You've seen my work at The Apple Blog, PCMag (from my first go around), This Week in Tech, and CNET. I also occasionally produce independent video projects, including This Old Nerd, a how-to series that shows practical ways to get the most from your tech.

The Technology I Use

I use a 2023 M3 MacBook Pro customized with lots of keyboard shortcuts thanks to Raycast. Pixelmator Pro is my go-to photo editing application because there is no subscription, and I'm trapped with Evernote because I've used it forever.

I'm between phones at the moment, but I use a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 now, and used a Z Fold 6 before that. Considering that I like to have multiple windows open at once, the large inner screen of folding phones can show a baseball game on the top while I keep a chat app and Reddit open beneath. I do miss being able to write on the Z Fold 7's screen, though, which has me eyeing a Galaxy S25 Ultra.

My home is semi-smart, with many Google Home products that I thoroughly enjoyed in the pre-Gemini days. Be warned: smart bulbs are a gateway drug into smart home life.
