The Samsung Galaxy S23 is almost here! Samsung today announced its next Galaxy Unpacked event, which will take place in person on Feb. 1 in San Francisco. The company didn't specify exactly what is on deck for the event, but for the past few years it has launched its flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S range, in late January or early February. The Galaxy S23 is widely believed to be the next in the series of superphones from Samsung.

The Galaxy S range goes head to head with the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel phones. Apple released the iPhone 14 last September and Google followed with the Pixel 7 family last October. The Galaxy S23 is expected to show up its competitors with a bevy of new features, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and a 200MP camera. The Galaxy S23 family is likely to include three phones, the smaller-stature S23, the mid-sized S23+, and the mega-huge S23 Ultra. The latter of these will be compatible with Samsung's S Pen stylus and have the largest display and top camera capabilities.

Invited attendees will be able to watch the action live at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, though Samsung says the event will also be livestreamed across its usual social and media channels.

Moreover, Samsung says it will open up its "US Reserve" offers for any forthcoming Galaxy devices starting today. Between Jan. 10 and Feb 1., anyone who reserves a Galaxy S23 device or Galaxy Book via Samsung's website or mobile app will be eligible for $50 in Samsung credit. Preordering two devices earns $100 in Samsung credit.

Crucially, this is a "no-commitment offer." In other words, customers need only supply some basic information to reserve a device and take advantage of the $50 or $100 in credit, which will be redeemable once they actually place an order. Putting your name on the reserve list doesn't require you to buy the phone.

Last, Samsung pointed out that people interested in discounts might consider trading in their old device. In particular, Samsung.com will offer top dollar for traded-in Galaxy phones. There will also be offers for eligible corporate partners, first responders, military personnel, and students. Samsung didn't say anything about offers from its carrier partners, but AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are typically aggressive when it comes to Galaxy S rebates and offers.

PCMag plans to cover the Samsung Galaxy S23 Unpacked event fully as it unfolds.

My Experience

I’m PCMag’s Managing Editor for Consumer Electronics content, overseeing an experienced team of reviewers and product testers. I’ve been covering technology for more than 25 years. Prior to PCMag, I worked at outlets such as Android Authority, Fortune, InformationWeek, and Phonescoop.

The Technology I Use

My main tool for getting work done is a 14-inch MacBook Pro. It’s a silent and fast machine with a good keyboard and excellent battery life. When I’m not using my laptop, you can find me working (and relaxing) with an iPad Pro. I’ve come to rely on its 5G data connection when traveling, which makes it an essential part of my workflow.

I consider myself an audiophile. That means my office and living room audio setups are total overkill, featuring advanced receivers, turntables, and Polk Audio speakers complete with subwoofers for the best possible sound, whether I’m listening to music or watching movies. My favorite earphones for private listening are the Sony WF-1000XM6.

When on the go, I typically use an iPhone 17 Pro Max for photos, but I don’t need much of an excuse to pull out my Sony mirrorless for high-resolution photography—especially when shooting sports.
