Samsung Display's Flex Hybrid Device Uses a Screen That Folds and Slides

It shouldn't be long now before we see the first smartphone with a 10-inch display.

Samsung Display figured out how to offer an even larger display on a folding smartphone or tablet without increasing the footprint of the device.

At CES 2023 later this week, Samsung Display will showcase its latest innovation: a display that both folds and slides. A prototype mobile device called the Flex Hybrid will be unveiled that uses a 10.5-inch folding display offering a 4:3 aspect ratio screen. However, the right side of the device slides out, increasing the screen size to 12.4 inches and changing the aspect ratio to 16:10.

By combining folding and sliding technology, Samsung Display can offer a screen that isn't limited by the size of the case as it can expand beyond that. The Galaxy Z Fold4 offers a 7.6-inch display, but using this new fold and slide combination that could be increased to nearly 10 inches in a future model.

How quickly a folding, sliding display makes it into a device we can all buy will depend mainly on durability. Folding display durability has come on leaps and bounds since the Galaxy Fold was released back in 2019, but adding sliding into the mix will throw up some new challenges that hopefully get fixed before the first commercial device is launched.
