Google Fi is a tempting alternative to the major US telecomms providers, especially if you take up its current offer for a very cheap Pixel 4a. However, if you're upgrading to an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro this month, don't expect a 5G connection on Google Fi.
As 9To5Google reports, Google Fi uses T-Mobile's network to offer a 5G connection nationwide, so subscribers would be right to think upgrading to iPhone 12 would include access to that 5G network. But that's not the case, at least not yet.
Accessing the Voice & Data settings on your iPhone 12 when connected to Google Fi apparently only brings up LTE and 4G as options. Users expect to also see 5G On and 5G Auto, but they aren't listed for Apple's latest, and first 5G phones. There are, however, six Samsung phones offering 5G on Google Fi, so why not for iPhone?
Google has confirmed there is a lack of support, stating, "Right now Fi 5G is not supported on iPhone 12 series; we’ll keep customers updated on the latest via our help center." It's unclear when this will be resolved, so for now anyone buying an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro and intending to use Google Fi just needs to be patient unfortunately.
