Express Yourself With Memoji

These customizable avatars work just like animoji in that they'll respond to your movements. It also means they're exclusive to the iPhone X for now.

Group Video Chat Delayed

Apple initially said that FaceTime would support up to 32 participants in iOS 12. For better or worse, that feature has been delayed.

Measuring Up ARKit 2

eApple continues to invest in augment reality (AR) with ARKit 2 included in iOS 12. That's important to developers, but you can get a peak at the technology in Apple's new Measure app. This lets you take fairly accurate measurements of your surroundings using just your phone. It's a remarkable experience.

Budget Your Time

Apple's iOS 12 includes tools to limit how much time you spend on your phone. Down Time is a scheduled period during which your apps are less accessible. App Limits are time limits for categories of apps. Always Allowed lets you whitelist apps you need all the time. Content & Privacy Restrictions are sweeping, powerful parental control features never before seen on iOS.

Shame Is a Powerful Motivator

Not sure you have a screen addiction issue? These charts may change your mind. They show how many nagging notifications you received and how many times you picked up your phone.

Draw Your Brakes

When Down Time is triggered, or you've reached the set App Limit, a screen like this one will appear. Inaccessible apps on your desktop are replaced with darkened icons to indicate they're out of action.

Blocked Websites

When you, or your child, tries to view blocked content, they'll see this page. Note that you have the opportunity to whitelist certain pages.

Smarter Distruptions

The Do Not Disturb feature will now shut itself off automatically at a set time, location, or at the end of your current calendar activity.

Improved Photo Search

Apple Photos now lets you stack multiple search terms and recognizes more people, places, and things. It's an improvement, but doesn't feel as powerful as Google Photos.

Siri Upgrades and Shortcuts

Siri gets some new powers in iOS 12, but the big change are Shortcuts. Your phone tracks your actions and offers suggestions for ones you can save as Shortcut. Choose one, record a trigger phrase, and you're ready to go.
