    Samsung Galaxy Watch 8

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • 3,000-nit display
      • AI coaching helps with sleep and fitness
      • Accurate heart rate tracking
      • Measures antioxidant levels
      • Google Gemini built-in
      • One-day battery life

    Why We Picked It

The Galaxy Watch 8 adds Samsung AI to help you sleep better and train for a marathon, as well as Google Gemini for virtual assistance. You can also use the watch to measure your antioxidant levels for dietary recommendations, and get insights into your arterial health through a new vascular load metric. Like previous models, it'll give you a daily Energy Score that encompasses all your tracked fitness and sleep metrics, along with a personalized wellness tip to help you feel your best. You can also use it to measure your body composition, similar to a smart scale. During the night, it can even detect snoring and sleep apnea. You'll need to charge it daily, but you'll be rewarded with the most feature-rich Android watch on the market.

    Who It's For

Samsung fans: The Galaxy Watch 8 provides the ideal mix of features and value in Samsung's current lineup of smartwatches. It also works best with Samsung phones specifically, as you need a first-party handset to access the AI-based Running Coach, irregular heart rhythm notifications, phone separation alerts, gesture controls, and snoring detection.

Health-focused AI enthusiasts: Samsung's AI in the Galaxy Watch 8 will help you train for a marathon and improve your sleep quality. The watch also packs in Google's AI Gemini for conversational assistance and voice-based phone control.

Users who want it all: With extensive connectivity, fitness, and lifestyle tools, alongside new health features like its AI coach, antioxidant detection, and vascular load sensing, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 has more capabilities than any smartwatch we've tested. If you want a watch that ticks off numerous boxes with innovative add-ons, this is it.

    Why We Picked It

The Garmin Venu Sq 2 stands out as both a premium fitness tracker and a basic smartwatch. It features a large AMOLED screen, a built-in GPS for fitness tracking, key lifestyle features like Garmin Pay, and a weeklong battery life that Google and Samsung's smartwatches can't match.

    Who It's For

Fitness and health enthusiasts: With support for numerous workout profiles, accurate heart rate sensing, and integrated GPS, the Garmin Venu Sq 2 excels at tracking activity and exercise. Beyond keeping up with your rigorous fitness regimen, it'll help you monitor your health 24/7 with on-demand blood oxygen saturation readings, detailed sleep tracking, and stress stats.

Travelers and endurance athletes: The Garmin Venu 2 lasts for roughly a week without needing a charge, offering much longer battery life than most major smartwatches.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch FE
    Credit: Andrew Gebhart
    Best Value

    Samsung Galaxy Watch FE

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Responsive touch and gesture controls
      • Accurate heart rate monitoring
      • In-depth sleep metrics
      • Detailed exercise tracking
      • Measures ECG, SpO2, body fat percentage, and more
      • Large app selection
      • Small screen with big bezels
      • Dated processor
      • No AI health insights

    Why We Picked It

The Galaxy Watch FE combines the usual variety of Wear OS apps and smarts with most of the fitness features of the Galaxy Watch 8 at a more affordable price. It tracks a wide range of workouts and accurately measures heart rate, pace, and VO2 Max, as well as advanced outdoor running metrics like asymmetry and vertical oscillation. It monitors sleep, including snoring, and allows you to measure your body fat percentage, similar to a smart scale. In other words, it remains ahead of the curve of Wear OS competitors when it comes to health tracking, thereby offering the best value for your money of any option on this list.

    Who It's For

Bargain hunters: If the Galaxy Watch 8 is a bit too pricey for you, the Galaxy Watch FE is an excellent alternative that makes some reasonable compromises, costing just over half as much. With the exception of Samsung's latest AI features, it offers almost all of the same useful lifestyle and fitness-tracking capabilities as its flagship counterparts. Thanks to WearOS, it has the same selection of apps. It can accurately monitor sleep and stress, and you can use it to manually track more than 100 different exercises.

Fans of smaller watches: The Samsung Galaxy Watch FE is available in just one 40mm size, offered in black, pink gold, or silver. For comparison, the Galaxy Watch 8 is available in 40mm and 44mm options, whereas the Galaxy Watch Ultra is offered in a single 47mm size. Like the rest of Samsung’s current watch lineup, the Galaxy Watch FE restricts access to certain features, such as snore detection, to first-party phones, making it work best with Samsung handsets.

  • Fitbit Sense 2
    Best Stress Management Features

    Fitbit Sense 2

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Slim, lightweight, comfortable design
      • Improved touch-screen responsiveness
      • 5-day battery life
      • Large, bright display
      • Excellent stress management features
      • Accurate body temperature data
      • Aesthetic downgrade from original model
      • No third-party app support
      • Some lifestyle apps from last generation removed
      • Band release latch can be accidentally triggered

    Why We Picked It

The Sense 2, Fitbit's top-of-the-line wearable, makes it easy to monitor your health and manage your stress. Its sensors monitor physical signs of stress throughout the day and help you track your moods to stay mindful. Fitbit lowered the price this generation and removed several lifestyle apps, steering it more toward wellness to differentiate it from its parent company, Google's Pixel Watch. We don't like the look of the new transparent display border for the heart rhythm sensor, but the second-generation Sense offers some usability improvements over the original, including a more responsive touch screen, a physical (vs. haptic) button, and slightly better battery life (around five days on a charge in our testing).

    Who It's For

Users looking to de-stress: The Sense 2 features a continuous electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor, which measures small electrical changes in your skin's sweat level to track your body's response to stress, alerting you when it's time to take a breather. In moments of stress, it asks you to reflect on how you're feeling and offers suggestions to help you relax. Its weekly summaries illuminate trends, such as your most stressful days and top moods.

Health fanatics: Fitbit's Sense 2 offers a wide range of activity tracking and health-monitoring features, including sensors to check blood oxygen saturation, breathing rate, heart rate variability, and skin temperature variation. I can also take an ECG and alert you about an irregular heart rhythm or a high or low heart rate. It's an excellent tool to help you stay active, reduce stress, and improve your overall wellness.

  • Fitbit Versa 4
    Best Fitbit Watch

    Fitbit Versa 4

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Attractive, comfortable design
      • Better touch-screen responsiveness than predecessor
      • Physical button improves usability
      • 40 exercise modes (up from 20)
      • Long battery life
      • Lots of watch faces
      • Tracks overnight skin temperature variation
      • No third-party app support
      • Some lifestyle apps from previous generation removed
      • Lacks ECG, stress sensors

    Why We Picked It

The fourth-generation Fitbit Versa offers all the excellent fitness and health features that have made the Versa line a favorite of ours, including 24/7 heart rate monitoring, guided breathing exercises, and automatic exercise recognition. You also get a GPS for pace, distance, and route tracking without your phone; a SpO2 sensor to measure blood oxygen saturation while you sleep; and a heat sensor to track overnight skin temperature variation. It also offers key lifestyle features, including Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth calling, Google Maps, Google Pay, and smartphone notifications.

    Who It's For

Fitness newbies: If you're in the market for an affordable fitness-focused smartwatch to try out the experience, the Versa 4 is the one to get. It lacks an ECG sensor and some stress-tracking functionality of the Sense 2, but it comes with a robust selection of fitness and health features. Specifically, it has more than 40 exercise modes and sensors to detect blood oxygen levels, heart rate, elevation, and overnight skin temperature.

Fitbit fans: The Versa 4 is our top pick among Fitbit-branded smartwatches, offering a thoughtful blend of fitness and lifestyle features in an attractive design at a competitive price. With a large screen, support for Bluetooth calls, and Amazon Alexa built in, it's a nice alternative to our favorite fitness tracker from the brand, the Charge 6.

  • Google Pixel Watch 4
    Credit: Andrew Gebhart
    Best Design

    Google Pixel Watch 4

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Stunning curved display
      • More than two days of battery life
      • Built-in Gemini for voice control
      • Accurate exercise, sleep tracking
      • Emergency satellite communication
      • No new sensors
      • Few software upgrades over its predecessor
      • Daily run recommendations are paywalled

    Why We Picked It

The Pixel Watch 4 retains the attractive domed face of its predecessor and features a curved display underneath, which offers a wider viewing angle, smaller bezels, and a larger active screen area. On the hardware side, it also features an improved battery that lasted well over two days in our testing, as well as a new processor that enables making emergency calls over satellite. From a fitness standpoint, it leverages its Fitbit integration to offer three helpful health insights: Readiness Score, Cardio Load, and Training Load. Readiness indicates how hard to push in a day, Cardio Load offers a rolling seven-day view of your fitness progress, and Training Load provides a dynamic activity goal that updates as you go about your day. Add in the usual lifestyle features and apps alongside the addition of Google Gemini to answer your voice commands, and the Pixel Watch 4 makes for a helpful and customizable smartwatch for fans of the brand.

    Who It's For

Style seekers: If you're looking for a sleek smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 4 is a top pick. Its curved display is both striking and unique, helping the smartwatch stand out in a good way. Text on the perimeter slightly bends around the edges, adding a sense of depth to the gorgeous curved glass on top. It comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes, available in a range of aluminum finishes, including champagne gold, matte black, polished silver, and satin moonstone.

Fitbit fans: The Pixel Watch 4 is your best bet if you want a smartwatch that offers Fitbit's health and fitness features as well as third-party Wear OS app support. It tracks heart rate accurately during workouts, measures sleep in detail, and provides a holistic view of your health with its Readiness Score, Cardio Load, and Training Load insights.

Pixel phone users: The Pixel Watch 4 works with any Android smartphone, but saves some tricks for Google's own devices, such as camera controls and phone call screening. In terms of lifestyle features, you can use the Pixel Watch 4 to make calls, send texts, download apps from the Play Store, pay for things in stores with a tap, send emails, access your calendar, and more

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Five-day battery life
      • Accurate exercise and sleep tracking
      • Dynamic AI health insights
      • Fall detection
      • Wrist temperature sensor
      • No cellular option
      • ECG disabled in the US

    Why We Picked It

The OnePlus Watch 3 outperforms other Wear OS smartwatches in terms of battery life, lasting over four days on a single charge with the always-on display enabled. It offers a wide selection of apps and smarts along with detailed health, sleep, and workout tracking. The Watch 3 also upgrades its predecessor with two size options, a wrist temperature sensor, fall detection, and personalized AI health insights.

    Why We Picked It

Users who want the longest battery life possible: This is the watch to get if you want all the perks of Google's wearable ecosystem with the best possible battery life. Running Wear OS, it gives you access to a wide range of apps, including third-party staples like Calm, Spotify, Strava, and more, as well as a capable mix of activity, sleep, and stress tracking features. In our testing, it powered through 98 hours on a single charge with its always-on display enabled, exceeding all other Wear OS models on this list.

OnePlus fans: By pairing the OnePlus Watch 3 to a OnePlus phone, you can use the watch to take pictures or control YouTube playback on your phone. You can't take advantage of those features with third-party phones, but it otherwise works just fine when paired with any Android handset running Android 9.0 or later.

      • Lacks an always-on display Occasional phone syncing issues No downloadable apps, mobile payments support, or onboard music storage

    Why We Picked It

Polar's products stand out for their accuracy, but the Ignite 2 also has style. On the design side, this GPS fitness watch features a bright color touch screen, an engraved metal bezel, and Swarovski crystal-embellished accessory bands (sold separately) for those who appreciate a bit of bling. It supports up to 20 sports profiles at a time from a list of 100—encompassing everything from baseball to roller skating—and also offers key lifestyle features, such as music controls and weather forecasts.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra
    Most Durable

    Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

    4.0 Excellent

    Pros & Cons

      • Battery lasts more than a day
      • Detailed sleep and health insights
      • Customizable Quick Button
      • Responsive touch and gesture controls
      • Durable titanium build
      • Big and bright display
      • Single bulky size option
      • Not suitable for water sports
      • Slightly inaccurate sleep time measurements
      • Expensive

    Why We Picked It

Meant for adventurers, the Galaxy Watch Ultra offers significantly better battery life than the flagship Galaxy Watch 8 (up to 46 hours on a charge with the always-on display enabled) and a more durable titanium case. It has a bright, 3,000-nit screen and a customizable action button. It also boasts a multi-sport tracking tile meant for triathlons and has improved water resistance with a 10ATM rating, up from 5ATM on the Watch 8. It's only available in a large 47mm case size, but its rugged design and adventuring features make it a good choice for mountain bikers, trail runners, hikers, and those who work outdoors, as well as anyone who wants a fully featured Android-compatible smartwatch that lasts more than a day on a charge.

    Who It's For

Mountain bikers, hikers, and swimmers: Just like Apple's Ultra watch, Samsung's is meant for adventure. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is best for Android users who want a watch they can confidently take hiking, on the trail, and on a climb. You can submerge it at depths of up to 328 feet in fresh or salt water (double that of other Galaxy Watches), and it can survive at extreme altitudes ranging from 1,640 feet below sea level to 29,527 feet above.

Accident-prone individuals: Even if you don't regularly head off on outdoor excursions, the rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra may be the right fit for you if you tend to be tough on your electronics. With a durable titanium body instead of the more typical aluminum, it offers peace of mind if you accidentally drop it or bang it around at the gym or elsewhere.

Samsung fans: Like the rest of Samsung's wearables, the Galaxy Watch Ultra works with Android phones of any brand, but saves its AI health insights and snoring detection for first-party handsets.

    Who It's For

Classic design fans: If you're a Samsung fan in pursuit of a wearable fit for a night on the town, the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic has the same extensive feature set as its more affordable sibling, including the Galaxy AI coaches and antioxidant testing, plus a rotating bezel that adds tactile controls and a vintage look.

People who want to avoid daily charging: In our testing, the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic lasted 49 hours on a single charge, outlasting even the Galaxy Watch Ultra (46 hours) and surpassing the regular Galaxy Watch 8 (26 hours). Senior Writer, Smart Home and Wearables

My Experience

I’m PCMag’s senior writer covering smart home and wearable devices. I’ve been reporting on tech professionally for nearly a decade and have been obsessing about it for much longer than that. Prior to joining PCMag, I made educational videos for an electronics store called Abt Electronics in Illinois, and before that, I spent eight years covering the smart home market for CNET.

I foster many flavors of nerdom in my personal life. I’m an avid board gamer and video gamer. I love fantasy football, which I view as a combination of role-playing games and sports. Plus, I can talk to you about craft beer for hours and am on a personal quest to have a flight of beer at each microbrewery in my home city of Chicago.

The Technology I Use

I tend to like mixing flavors from various companies. My personal computer is an Apple MacBook Pro. My phone is a Google Pixel 7a. On my wrists are an ever-rotating lineup of the latest smartwatches, and I sometimes wear two at once for testing and extra style. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a mainstay on my wrist because I use it as a control for evaluating the accuracy of other devices' fitness metrics.

I spend plenty of time in front of my entertainment center, which features a 55-inch LG OLED TV, a Yamaha soundbar, a Nintendo Switch, and a PS5. (I insisted on getting the PS5 with the disc slot when they were hard to come by and haven’t used the feature in more than a year.) I thought I’d have given in to temptation and snagged an Xbox to play Starfield by now, but Baldur’s Gate 3 saved me money by distracting me long enough for the Starfield hype to blow past.

I have two cats and sneeze plenty, so I have a Shark Air Purifier to help me fight back against their dastardly, shedding ways.

I use my aforementioned Pixel 7a and a Nest Hub for Google Assistant, an iPhone 16e and AirPods to talk to Siri, and an Amazon Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 15 for Alexa, so I’m not in danger of losing touch with any of the big three digital assistants.
