Verizon isn’t exactly known as a video game console retailer, but that isn’t stopping the mobile phone carrier from offering Sony’s Playstation 5

“In the near future, Verizon will be selling a very limited quantity of Sony PlayStation 5 consoles in a handful of pilot stores and online,” a company spokesperson told PCMag on Tuesday. “Inventory will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.”

The carrier confirmed the sales after a Twitter user who tracks PS5 restocks noticed product listings for the console had gone up on Verizon’s e-commerce site.

"I have no idea when they will drop, they loaded backend data a couple weeks ago and knew these listings would be up soon,” @LordofRestocks said. Links to the product listings can be found below.

The bad news is that the online sales won’t be open to all. “Online customers must have an existing, post-paid Verizon wireless account to purchase a PS5 console online, subject to availability and existing inventory,” Verizon’s spokesperson said.

The other problem is that Verizon didn’t say when the sales will start. So hopefully the carrier tips off eligible consumers with an email ahead of time, otherwise expert PS5 hunters will be the only ones aware of the sales.

If you’re still looking to own a PS5,  we recommend you get on social media. There are numerous Twitter profiles and YouTube channels that monitor PS5 and Xbox Series X inventory, which can tip you off to restocks. Just be on the lookout for social media scams pretending to sell you a PS5 for normal retail price.

As for Verizon, the company says it’s selling the PS5 because its 5G network can power gaming experiences, whether it be on the phone or through cloud-based game streaming. “Verizon is further establishing itself as the go-to-source for all things gaming, including 5G and gigabit connectivity, the latest accessories and the most popular consoles available today,” the company’s spokesperson added.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
