Google Assistant Smart Displays Get Continued Conversation

Smart display owners in the US will soon be able to say 'Hey Google' just once before asking multiple questions in a row. The conversation upgrade only works when the language is set to English (United States), though.

If you own a smart display that uses Google Assistant in the US, then your display is getting an upgrade within the next few day.

As Android Central reports, Google has confirmed that the Google Home Hub and other Smart Displays running Google Assistant will be upgraded to support Continued Conversation. It's a feature already present on smart speakers and a much welcome addition to Home Hub, Lenovo Smart Display, and the like.

With Continued Conversation enabled (users can toggle it on or off), it's possible to keep talking to the Assistant without having to say "Hey Google" before asking each question. In the case of Smart Displays, you'll know Assistant is still listening by the Assistant icon being present on the display. If you don't say anything for eight seconds it will disappear and "Hey Google" will be required once again to restart the conversation.

The two prerequisites for Continued Conversation working are that your smart display is located within the US and that the language is set to English (United States). For now, it won't work anywhere else in the world or with any other language set.

If you want to stop the Assistant listening because you've finished asking questions, simply say "thank you," "thanks, Google," or "I'm done," and the Assistant icon should disappear from the display immediately.

It seems likely Google will have rolled out Continued Conversation to most smart displays in the US before the weekend is over. Once you've experienced it, I'm sure going back to using repeated "Hey Google" triggers will be quite painful and jarring.
