Grad gifts are tough. Parents and friends of recent graduates don't want to give them another useless trinket. You want to give a gift that offers a genuine leg up as they head to their first real job. The workplace has changed a great deal in the last decade, with hybrid environments and AI-driven workflows reshaping the professional landscape, but there is still fundamental work to be done—and having the right equipment is always going to help someone succeed. It comes down to a timeless philosophy: every craftsman needs the right tools, and in our tech-enabled world, that starts with a great PC.

Because no two career paths are identical, having the right laptop with the right combination of processing power, capability, and features is key to doing whatever the job is—from finance analysis to engineering. This guide pairs those specialized machines with high-utility accessories, like productivity-boosting keyboards and wearable AI tools, designed to streamline the transition into the workforce. Whether you pick a laptop or one of our hand-picked pieces of office gear, you can feel confident that you are choosing the tools to help them succeed from day one.

Best Laptop for Liberal Arts Grads

Apple MacBook Neo

4.5 Outstanding

Normally, we suggest Apple's MacBook Neo to almost anyone, given its astounding price. However, with a durable all-aluminum frame, full macOS powered by a peppy A18 Pro processor, and a keyboard that matches some of the top models, it's also the new favorite for liberal arts, communications, and writing grads. From typing up articles to touching up photos, it's amazing how much this budget laptop handles and how easily it leaves everything else looking overpriced.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition

5.0 Exemplary

With a super-lightweight carbon-fiber and magnesium-alloy frame, the 2.17-pound ThinkPad X1 Carbon is our favorite laptop for business grads (and office workers in general). In addition to excellent portability and speedy overall performance, Lenovo outfitted the laptop with a sharp 1800p OLED screen and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. We not only gave the X1 an Editors' Choice award, but it also earned a perfect five-star rating and was named one of our best laptops of 2025.

Best Laptop for Content Creation Grads

Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch (2026, M5 Max)

4.5 Outstanding

For creators, it's not enough to have access to your favorite video-editing apps, like the Mac-exclusive Final Cut Pro. You need ample processing power, a large color-rich display, and enough memory and storage to handle big projects. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max delivers all of that and more, with Apple's top processor, a 40-core AI-enhanced GPU, and enough memory and storage to satisfy any budding creative pro. The laptop also lasts quite a while on a single charge.

Best Windows Laptop for Finance Grads

Dell XPS 14 (2026)

4.0 Excellent

Data-crunching finance pros want an ultraportable laptop that can work when and where they need it to. The Dell XPS 14 delivers with a powerful 16-core Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor, a slim and stylish design, and 32GB of 9,600MHz DDR5 memory for faster multitasking across spreadsheets and databases. The laptop's powerful NPU also works well for AI tasks. Dell included a 4K webcam that can make you look better in meetings, and the battery can last through a whole workday.

Best MacBook for Finance Grads

Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch (2026, M5) [Review]

4.0 Excellent

Apple-loving finance pros will find that the MacBook Air is more capable than ever, packing a competent work laptop into an extremely thin and light design. The fanless M5 chip stays silent, even as it handles resource-intensive financial modeling and data analysis apps. The Liquid Retina display looks sharp and colorful, and the battery will last all day. Just consider opting for more memory (maybe 24GB) and storage (definitely 1TB) than Apple's base configuration.

Framework Laptop 16 (2025)

4.5 Outstanding

The best laptop for a budding programmer is one that can stick around for a long time. The Framework 16 has swappable ports, modular internals, and a removable GPU module, scaling up or down in power as needed. With its AMD Ryzen AI 300 processor, you can locally run large language models (LLMs) and large-scale data processing. And Framework's design gives you the freedom to upgrade each part when the next must-have chip comes around, saving you a bundle compared with replacing your whole laptop.

For newly graduated programmers who prefer Macs or want to develop Apple apps, go for the M5-equipped 14-inch MacBook Pro. My Experience

From the laptops on your desk to satellites in space and AI that seems to be everywhere, I cover many topics at PCMag. I've covered PCs and technology products for over 15 years at PCMag and other publications, among them Tom's Guide, Laptop Mag, and TWICE. As a hardware reviewer, I've handled dozens of MacBooks, 2-in-1 laptops, Chromebooks, and the latest AI PCs. As the resident Starlink expert, I've done years of hands-on testing with the satellite service. I also explore the most valuable ways to use the latest AI tools and features in our Try AI column.

The Technology I Use

Between the Starlink dish on my roof and the laptop or desktop I'm using right now, I've always got a new tech product in front of me. I have five or six laptops in rotation at any moment, along with a couple of mini PCs, two smart TVs, and a couple of Chromebooks for good measure.

Everything is connected via Starlink, using the latest Dish V4 and Gen 3 Router, letting me live my tech-centric life in rural Idaho.

When I'm not testing and reviewing products, I'm probably using one of a dozen AI tools for everything from work and productivity to entertainment and saving some money.
