A massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Taiwan quickly took down production for several tech companies there, including chip maker TSMC and modular laptop manufacturer Framework.

Framework is stopping production until further notice, while Apple and Nvidia chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has stopped production at some of its factories and evacuated employees, Bloomberg reports.

"Our production in Taiwan is temporarily paused to prioritize worker safety while our manufacturing partner checks for any impact from the earthquake today," Framework wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, late Tuesday night. "We're hoping for the best for our friends, colleagues, and partners across Taiwan."

TSMC plans to resume production overnight beginning Wednesday evening, per Bloomberg.

Hualien County in Taiwan was the epicenter for the earthquake, which is about a 98-mile drive southeast from Taipei, the country's capital city. Framework has a fulfillment partner in Taoyuan, which is 18.5 miles slightly southwest of Taipei, and its factory is nearby. A map of the shake intensity from the US Geological Survey published by The New York Times shows that while Hualien faced the strongest part of the earthquake, Taoyuan and Taipei also saw "strong" shake intensity, as opposed to "mild" or "moderate."

While it's currently unclear if any of Framework's manufacturing locations or affiliated workers may have been injured during the earthquake or its aftershocks, the event is considered the strongest earthquake Taiwan has seen in 25 years. CNN reports that over 700 have been injured and over 100 buildings have been damaged. The New York Times reports that nine people have died. Rescuers are also working to free 60 people trapped in a tunnel. Nearly all of Taipei's hospitals are fully operating, however.

The NYT reports that 100 aftershock earthquakes have already occurred, with one being a magnitude 6.5 quake. More are expected, unfortunately, and could continue to have substantial impact on the country.

I’m a reporter for PCMag covering tech news early in the morning. Prior to joining PCMag, I was a producer and reporter at Decrypt and launched its gaming vertical, GG. I have previously written for Input, Game Rant, Dot Esports, and other places, covering a range of gaming, tech, crypto, and entertainment news.

I’ve been a PC gamer since The Sims (yes, the original) in the CD-ROM days. I still think about my first-gen pink iPod mini, which, looking back, was not so mini. In 2020, I finally built my own custom Windows PC for gaming with a 3090 graphics card, but I also regularly use Mac and iOS devices. As a reporter, I’m passionate about documenting the wide world of tech and how it affects our daily lives.
