Apple took plenty of shots at Windows PCs today when it introduced the company’s new ARM-powered Mac computers. But to really rub it in, the company hired actor John Hodgman to reprise his role as an inept PC from Apple’s notorious “Get a Mac” commercials.

Hodgman made the cameo at the end of today’s event, personifying a Windows PC jealous of all the new features arriving to the ARM-powered Macs, which go on sale next week.

“Is there a time for questions? Good, cause I have one: Why? WHHYYY? Why make all these advancements?” Hodgman asks. “What’s the point?”

He then goes on to compare himself to the new MacBooks, which are designed to offer longer battery life and faster performance. According to Hodgman's shtick, Windows PCs are superior because they have no need for such features.

“Oh, you’re so quiet now,” Hodgman says, referencing the MacBook Air's new fan-less design. “Look, I’m a machine. I’m proud of it. Nrggg-nrggg-nrggg-nrgggg. That’s my fan,” he said trying to mimic the sound of a motor.

“Longer battery life? Plug it in. Where are you going? Just plug it in,” he adds.

PC users won’t be amused by the cameo, since it’s full of gross misinformation, and goes overboard with the unnecessary trolling (wink-wink.) Indeed, plenty of Windows laptops have long battery life, fast performance, especially for gaming. It also took years for Apple to address the keyboard problems in its expensive laptops.

Still, Apple is claiming the new ARM-powered Macs will offer massive performance gains in CPU and GPU speeds, thanks to the new M1 chip inside. The company’s benchmarks are boasting the M1 silicon can outperform rival laptop chips at any power level. So stay tuned for our reviews when we can put the new Macs to the test.

As for Hodgman, we’ll have to wait and see if his appearance is a one-off or if he’ll appear again in a future line of “Get a Mac” commercials. However, his counterpart, Justin Long who played the cool Mac, was absent from the cameo.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
