AT&T's Easter basket was filled with more than colorful eggs and chocolate this year. The telecom on Sunday promised three months of free wireless for frontline healthcare workers nationwide via its FirstNet network.
The announcement came in the third episode of John Krasinski's online show Some Good News, in which The Office and Jack Ryan actor covers only positive stories from around the world. After surprising five nurses from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston with a trip to Fenway Park—where they threw out the first (and possibly only) pitch of 2020—Krasinski revealed how AT&T is giving back.
"This week when they found out that we'd be honoring our healthcare heroes this episode, AT&T reached out and asked how they can help," he said. "Having no idea what I'm talking about, I said, 'Maybe you can cover the cell phone bills of every nurse and doctor in America for a month.' Their response: 'How about three?'
"Now, I may not know much, but I do know what good news looks like," Krasinski continued. "And AT&T, through FirstNet—their network dedicated solely to first responders—are offering to take care of our healthcare heroes in an unprecedented way. And for that reason, we here at SGN wanna thank them the only way that we know how," he added, holding up an AT&T logo seemingly painted by his young children.
Medical workers already on the FirstNet Mobile-Responder plan automatically receive the three-month credit; starting today, new subscribers are also eligible. In addition, nurses and physicians signing up to FirstNet can get a $200 activation credit when activating a new device.
"[Sunday's] Some Good News shined a light on our healthcare heroes," Jeff McElfresh, AT&T Communications CEO, said in a statement. "They are working around the clock on the frontlines to combat the COVID-19 health crisis. We want to be there to keep them connected. And that's exactly what FirstNet delivers."
