Netflix Nabs 'Seinfeld' Amid Battle For Streaming Viewers

Netflix is set to lose 'Friends' in 2020 and 'The Office' in 2021 to rival streaming services, so it's paying up for Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. Netflix hasn't said how much it paid in the 'Seinfeld' deal, but it's reportedly more than $500 million.

Netflix is getting Seinfeld, one of the most popular TV shows of all time. But subscribers will have to wait until 2021 when the video streaming service's deal kicks in.

The timing of today's announcement from Netflix may seem premature since, "Seinfeld" won't be available for more than 15 months, but it's a high-profile get for the leading streaming platform after losing bidding wars for other iconic sitcoms. Netflix is losing Friends to HBO Max in 2020 (WarnerMedia paid $425 million for the rights) and The Office to NBCUniversal's forthcoming streaming app.

So far, Netflix hasn't said how much it paid for Seinfeld. But according to The Los Angeles Times, the price tag exceeds the $500 million NBCUniversal paid for The Office. All three of the deals are for five-year rights periods. Hulu paid a reported $160-$180 million for five years of US Seinfeld rights in 2015, which in retrospect seems like a bargain.

The deal arrives as Netflix has been spending billions on creating its own original content, including TV shows and movies, to battle incoming rivals, which will include streaming services from Disney and Apple. In its Q2 earnings, Netflix for the first time reported losing US subscribers following a price hike that raised the standard plan from $11 to $13 per month.

Despite the push for original content, Netflix has also been spending a fortune to essentially stream reruns of classic TV shows. Back in December, the company reportedly paid $100 million to renew licensing for Friends until the end of this year when it goes to HBO Max.

A big question is whether Seinfeld will be able to command the same viewership as The Office does. If you're a Netflix subscriber and can't wait until 2021, Seinfeld is currently available for streaming on Hulu, which is now owned by Disney and will soon be part of a larger bundle with Disney+ and ESPN+.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
