Want to keep an eye on your house and its contents while you're away from home, keep an eye on the kids, or simply check in on your pets when you're at work? Then look no further than our five top-rated indoor surveillance cameras.
Icontrol Networks Piper nv
The Icontrol Networks Piper nv camera boasts excellent HD image detail, sharp night vision, plus pan, tilt and zoom functions. Available in black or white, this compact and discreet device also offers two-way audio, motion/sound detection and temperature tracking, while live video can be viewed on a smartphone or tablet using the dedicated app. Uniquely, it also doubles as a home automation hub when linked to devices such as smart switches and sensors, also available from Piper.
Nest Cam
Simple to install, and with a magnetic base for instant mounting onto metal surfaces, the Nest Cam is a dual-band Wi-Fi surveillance camera offering crisp 1080p video, a 130-degree field of view, motion and sound detection, 8x digital zoom, plus infrared LEDs for night vision. The downside is that, while live video can be streamed for free, you have to pay to download recorded video via a subscription service.

Canary All-in-one Home Security Device
A sleek and stylish device available in black, white or silver finish, the Canary All-in-one Home Security Device provides live on-demand video via a free app, mobile alerts and sharp imagery via a 1080p camera with a 147-degree viewing angle, 3x zoom and night vision with a range of up to 25 feet. It also tracks humidity levels, air quality and temperature in your home. Unlike other models, there's no two-way audio function.
Netgear Arlo Q
Easy to set up, the Netgear Arlo Q connects to your home's Wi-Fi network so you can view live on-demand video using your smartphone. Day and night vision imagery is clear and crisp, although there was some lag during streaming of live footage in our tests. The plus points include email and push notifications, plus free cloud storage.
Petcube Play
The Petcube Play is marketed as an interactive Wi-Fi pet camera. This means that, as well as the standard surveillance camera features (night and day vision, alerts, optional cloud storage and an associated app), there's a microphone and speaker, so that you can talk to your pet while you're out of the house, and a remotely-controllable laser pointer to entertain and exercise a feline or canine friend.
