Well, that was fast. The high price for Nvidia’s RTX 4090 didn’t stop the PC graphics card from selling out early this morning.

Many models for the RTX 4090 —which starts at $1,599— went out of stock minutes after going up for sale on Newegg and Best Buy at 9 a.m. EST/6 a.m. PST.

The demand was apparent with Nvidia’s Founders Edition RTX 4090, which is being sold exclusively via Best Buy. The product was listed as “Coming Soon” when we visited the product page at 6:01 a.m. But a minute later, the page was listed as “Sold Out,” denying us a chance to buy the graphics card.

Best Buy
Womp, womp.

Still, if you got up early to purchase an RTX 4090 today, and didn’t care about the exact model, you probably were able to successfully order one. Through Newegg, we managed to reach the final stage of the checkout process for several models of the RTX 4090 during the 6 a.m. to 6:11 a.m. time frame.

The situation was an improvement from 2020's disappointing launch for the RTX 3090. However, the supplies for the RTX 4090 quickly ran out as the minutes ticked by.

Newegg listing
Newegg had plenty of stock if you were fast.

Not everyone failed to snag a Founders Edition RTX 4090 from Best Buy either. A GPU-tracking service called Falcodrin Stock Alerts publicly circulated a link on Twitter and Discord minutes before 6 a.m that would allow any user to immediately enter the digital queue for the product on Best Buy.

This helped some customers nab the RTX 4090, likely ahead of the others. So it’s a good idea to follow a GPU tracking service if you’re hoping to land the products on launch day. Falcodrin continues to post where RTX 4090 units are restocking.

Although the RTX 4090 has an extremely high price, our testing show the graphics card can offer a massive performance gain over the previous generation. Hence, the reviews for the product may have sparked plenty of demand among consumers willing to pay up. On eBay, some scalpers are already attempting to sell the RTX 4090 from $2,200 to $3,499 or more.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
