If you’re still struggling to buy a PlayStation 5, there’s good news: Despite the ongoing chip shortage, Sony has set the ambitious goal of doubling PS5 shipments over the next 12 months.

“Although constraints on the supply of components, especially semiconductors, are expected to continue this fiscal year, our current target is to exceed the 14.8 million units we sold in the second year after the launch of the PlayStation 4,” the company wrote in its earnings presentation for fiscal Q4, which ended on March 31.

So far, the current pace of PS5 inventory has slowed. From January to March, Sony shipped 3.3 million units of the PS5, down from the 4.5 million units it sent out during the initial launch in November and December.

This means the company has shipped 7.8 million PS5 units in total. However, Sony points out the figure is slightly more than what it shipped during the initial release for the PS4 in 2013.

The company’s goal is for PS5 supplies to outpace the PS4. However, Sony is still warning that the semiconductor shortage and other challenges could slow the console’s production.

“Can we drastically increase the supply? No, that’s not likely,” company executives said during an earnings call, which was translated. “So the shortage of semiconductors is one factor. But there are other factors which will impact on production volume. So that at present we would like to aim at second [fiscal] year sales at 14.8 million units.”

In the meantime, the PS5 has remained largely out of stock at the major retailers. To buy one immediately, you can try eBay, where scalpers are reselling the console, but often for twice the normal price.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
