Mac users will soon be able to visit Night City natively. The hit PC game Cyberpunk 2077 is finally coming to Apple’s macOS on Thursday, July 17th.
On Tuesday, the developer CD Projekt RED made the announcement after previously teasing it back in October. The company says it’s optimized Cyberpunk 2077 for Apple’s Arm-based M chips, including “every Apple silicon Mac model.”
However, the five-year-old game requires macOS 15.5 (Sequoia) and 16GB of unified RAM for the best experience. So Macs that feature only 8GB of RAM may experience laggy performance.
(CD Projekt RED)The news represents a small win for Apple’s macOS, which features a modest catalog of natively-designed games compared to Microsoft’s Windows OS. We’ll be curious to see how the Mac version of the game performs since it’s designed to harness Metal, Apple’s 3D graphics technology. The release also offers a fresh opportunity to benchmark Apple’s graphics performance against AMD and Nvidia GPUs, which can already run the game on Windows.
In a statement, Apple itself noted: “Players using everything from M1 models to the recently released Macs with M4 and M3 family of chips — including the new iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and Mac Studio with M3 Ultra— can expect an experience optimized to their hardware and finely tuned to bring out the full capabilities of the Mac lineup.”
(CD Projekt RED)Cyberpunk 2077 itself came out in 2020, the same year Apple introduced the first Arm-based Macs. The first-person adventure title initially faced controversy for its rushed release, but it’s since received rave reviews after CD Projekt RED continued to patch and improve the game.
CD Projekt RED plans on selling Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for macOS through the official Mac App Store, Valve’s Steam store, Gog.com and the Epic Games Store.
The Ultimate Edition packs the original game along with the 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty. “The game will also contain every major update and patch released so far, including today’s latest Patch 2.3, which introduces new Photo Mode functionality, additional cars, and more,” CD Projekt RED added.
