Electronic Arts released the first gameplay trailer for Dead Space today, which has been completely rebuilt from the ground up for modern gaming PC and games console hardware.

The trailer gives us our first glimpse of what developer Motive Studio has managed to do with the 2008 original using EA's proprietary Frostbite 4.0 game engine. Version 4.0 was also used for Battlefield 2042 and FIFA 23.

Motive previously worked on Star Wars: Squadrons, which used Frostbite 3.0, so they have plenty of experience using EA's tools and game engine.

EA is promising "a deeper and more immersive experience" thanks to the "jaw-dropping visual fidelity and suspenseful atmospheric audio" available now consumers have much more powerful gaming hardware. There's also the ability to output those visuals on a 4K TV with HDR and 120Hz refresh rates.

As well as looking stunning, Motive has taken the time to improve on the original gameplay and add new content, but "while staying faithful to the original game’s thrilling vision." Content removed from the original game due to technical constraints will be included in the remake, and Motive is taking advantage of fast SSD storage to ensure there are no loading screens. The team also reached out to hardcore fans of the original to ensure they got the remake right and understood what made the game so popular first time around.

Dead Space is currently scheduled for release on Jan. 27, 2023 and will be available on Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X or Series S. Based on this trailer, a 4K TV or monitor and a dark room are recommended to ensure you are terrified while playing.
