A Compact, Restrained Design

The Legion Y740 has an angular, modern-looking design. The display hinge is set in front of a rear thermal block that helps keep the rest of the laptop thin. Aesthetically, it's on the more tasteful side of gaming-laptop designs, perhaps bordering on too plain for some. But I favor restraint above an over-the-top look any day.

One Handsome Lid

The entire chassis is silver and black, with a smooth finish on the lid and a Legion logo running along the side. It avoids the gaudy, unattractive lid logo that plagues many gaming laptops.

A Gaming-Centric Display

The display itself is a 15.6-inch full HD IPS panel, but that's not all it has going for it. As is becoming increasingly common, the screen also supports a 144Hz refresh rate and Nvidia's G-Sync, two high-end features that essentially make games look smoother in action.

The Keyboard and the Touchpad

I have no real complaints about the build quality of the keyboard or touchpad. If I were to nitpick: The keys have a somewhat mushy feel when fully depressed, and the touchpad is on the small side, but they're more than serviceable on the whole.

Rear Ports

As with the 17-inch version, most of the ports are located around back, on the thermal block. Among them are two USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort connection, an Ethernet jack, and the power connection. The right flank of the laptop holds another USB 3.1 port, and the left has a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 and a headset jack.

Lit Port Icons

The port icons on the rear block face upward, which is useful on its own, and their backlighting makes finding the right connection even easier.

The Legion's Left-Edge Ports...

Since most of the laptop's ports are on the strip on the back, the left only holds a headset jack and a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3.

...and the Ones on the Right

You'll find even fewer on this side, which is home to just one USB 3.1 port.

My Experience

I’ve been a consumer PC expert at PCMag for 10 years, and I love PC gaming. I've played games on my computer for as long as I can remember, which eventually (as it does for many) led me to build and upgrade my own desktops to this day. Through my years at PCMag, I've tested and reviewed many, many dozens of laptops and desktops, and I am always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget.

The Technology I Use

The single piece of technology I use the most (by far!) is my self-built desktop. I spend a lot of my time gaming (and now, working) on this system, and I’m likely to continue upgrading it in some form forever. As it relates to my work at PCMag, it’s a vital window into keeping up to date with components, performance, and the latest titles. On the smartphone front, I’m a full-time Android user.

I’m always eyeing my next GPU upgrade, but the consistent part of my gaming setup has been a 165Hz 1440p monitor; I think this remains the sweet spot for the time being. A dual-monitor setup has been essential for work and play; my second screen is either a productivity monitor, playing videos for entertainment, or being used for console gaming, depending on the time of day.

Speaking of which, I may be primarily a PC gamer, but (like any good gaming enthusiast without enough discipline) I also own a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series S, a Steam Deck, and a Nintendo Switch 2. The PS5 and Xbox are hooked up to a living-room television for a more laid-back couch experience; I've found Gamepass to be especially handy for cooperative play and for taking my saved-game files from my desk to my couch through the cloud.
