How much you spend on your dad, uncle, or father figure this Father's Day is not what counts, but you want to get something nice without extending yourself so far that you have to ask him for a loan. While you might still be social distancing in your neck of the woods and unable to see him in person, let the tech-savvy man in your life know you care with one of the gadgets below. These gift picks appeal to a wide variety of dads and all come in under $100.

For Music-Loving Fitness Dads

If dad enjoys listening to music while working out, the EarFun Free true wireless earphones may be the perfect option. They combine quality audio performance with a waterproof design for an impressively low price.

For Over-Ear Headphone Fans

Maybe dad prefers over-ear headphones for high-quality listening. If that's the case, the Status Audio BT One wireless headphones deliver strong audio in a handsome design for a surprisingly affordable price.

For Music-Loving Outdoorsy Dads

If dad likes to chill outside during the summer months, why not add a good outdoor speaker at an affordable price? The Sony SRS-XB12 packs a powerful punch for such a tiny speaker, and its waterproof build means it can be nearby the pool.

For Data-Loving Fitness Dads

If dad is into staying fit, a heart rate monitor may be a good gift to help him get the most out of his workouts. The Wahoo Tickr X doubles as a run tracker, works indoors and out, and even counts reps during strength training.

A Wearable for an Unbeatable Price

The Wyze Band is a great gift to help dad get into fitness tracking. At just $25, it lets you control Wyze and Alexa-connected smart home devices from your wrist.

For Dads Who Need a (Voice) Assistant

The Amazon Echo Show 5 is an affordable little smart display that can bring Alexa voice commands to his desk, shelf, or nightstand.

For Dads Who Like to Keep It Simple

The Amazon Echo Dot with Clock may simply be an Echo Dot smart speaker with an LED clock on the front, but it's terrific. Dad will love being able to control his alarm clock with his voice.

For Binge-Watching Dads

The Roku Streaming Stick+ is one of the easiest ways to smarten up dad's TV. It easily solves the aesthetic problem of streaming on a wall-mounted TV, is portable, and of course gets nearly 2,000 channels.

For Dads Who Need a No-Fuss Tablet

If he needs a tablet for watching movies, playing games, and checking email, the 2020 Amazon Fire HD 8 continues to be an excellent value for the price. Its app store can't compete with the bigger players, but the basics are there.

For Well-Read Bookworms

If dad's an avid reader, get him an e-book reader so he can read anything he wants from one device. The latest Amazon Kindle improves night reading with its front light (though if you can swing an extra $40, the Paperwhite offers better overall value for most).

Help Dad Keep Tabs on the Front Door

Turn your doorbell into an internet-connected smart device with the affordable RemoBell S video doorbell. It's loaded with features including motion detection, free cloud storage, support for Alexa and Google voice commands, and interoperability with other smart devices via IFTTT.

For Dads Who Like to Tinker

Get dad into smart lighting by buying him the Yeelight Smart LED Bulb. It's an affordable color LED bulb he can control with his phone or voice, and it doesn't require a hub. It supports HomeKit, Alexa, and Google platforms and works with other smart devices via IFTTT.

For Multi-Tasking Dads

For inside the house, the ConnectSense Smart Outlet 2 is an Editors' Choice among smart plugs. This feature-rich smart plug works with Apple HomeKit and supports Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri voice commands, allowing him to voice activate anything plugged into it.

For Wannabe Master Chefs

Upgrade dad's grilling techniques with the Weber iGrill Mini, a small connected thermometer that allows him to monitor the temperature of any dish from a smartphone.

For Budding Mixologists

Looking for something to keep dad occupied? The Perfect Drink Pro smart scale and app will help him make bartender-worthy cocktails no matter how good a mixologist he might be.

For Road Warriors

If he's always on the go but still needs to get his work done, Logitech's Keys-to-Go Keyboard makes for a great gift. This Bluetooth keyboard is light and slim, making it the perfect traveling companion for any phone or tablet.

For Power-Hungry Pops

If he's burning through that smartphone battery, the Anker PowerCore II 20000 is a reasonably sized battery with lots of power for charging two mobile devices at once.

For Dads Who Need Backup

If you're shopping for a dad with a large collection of files, videos, or photos, a good external hard drive can do wonders. Combining on-point performance and strong encryption, the Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch portable drive is available with up to 2TB of storage, and is an Editors' Choice in this space. It's a great choice for everyday backups and security-first use, plus the fabric coats adds appeal.

For Forgetful Fathers

Fathers can be scatter-brained. Make sure he never loses his keys or luggage by getting him a Tile tracker, which attach to pretty much anything.

My Experience

As PCMag's editor of how to content, I have to cover a wide variety of topics and also make our stories accessible to everyday users. Considering my history as a technical writer, copywriter, and all-around freelancer covering baseball, comics, and more at various outlets, I am used to making myself into an expert.

I believe tech corporations are bad, but you might as well know how to use technology in everyday life. Want more how to content delivered right to your inbox? Sign up for the tips and tricks newsletter that I curate twice a week.

The Technology I Use

My job as how-to guru means I use just about every gadget under the sun, so I can figure out how everything works. I work from a Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 11, but also have a very large Dell Inspiron 17 3000 and Apple silicon MacBook. I also have a Google Pixel 6a for personal use and use a Galaxy Z Flip 4 for additional Samsung-related testing. For iOS coverage, an iPhone 13 mini works like a charm, though it's already becoming a little long in the tooth.

My desktop situation includes a dual monitor setup with a modest Acer monitor. I also use a Logitech mouse (who can use these ThinkPad trackpads) and a Havit keyboard (my first mechanical keyboard; I love it but my wife hates it!). I'm a recent convert from wired headphones; I have Anker Soundcore Liberty Air wireless earbuds for personal use and have taken to the Sennheiser HD 450BT headphones for work.

Whenever I have a second to myself, I'm probably gaming on my Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, or Xbox Series S. I also still have a bunch of classic consoles lying around as well.
