It can be hard to shop for the chefs in your life. You might not know how well-equipped their kitchen is or what they want. The sheer number of cooking gadgets out there is mind-boggling, but most of them are pretty low-tech (and generally fall into the As Seen on TV category).

We've found a baker's dozen of gifts they'll be happy to receive instead. They can imagine themselves competing on Top Chef or sweating it out under the tents at The Great British Bake Off while they sous vide, smoke meat, grill, bake, or mix cocktails with these clever devices.

Cinder Grill

The Cinder Grill looks like your average electric grill, but it's closer to a sous vide system in execution. The grill is capable of heating up to very precise temperatures like an immersion circulator, heating foods to the ideal internal temperature. After the food is cooked, the grill can reach searing temperatures of over 500 degrees, producing the crisp texture that sous vide alone can't provide.

Hamilton Beach Bread Maker

Whether or not they embarked on the early-pandemic sourdough craze, they'll appreciate the ease with which they can churn out a fresh loaf of bread every morning with this Hamilton Beach breadmaker. It has programmed cycles for artisan, gluten-free, French, whole-grain, sweet, quick, and express breads and even cakes and jams.

Philips Smart Pasta Maker Plus

There is truly nothing like fresh pasta. But making it from scratch can be a pain. Not so with the Philips Smart Pasta Maker Plus, which weighs all the ingredients, mixes them, kneads the dough, and extrudes pasta in less than 10 minutes.

Breville Smart Waffle Pro 4 Slice

Waffles are delicious but can be difficult to make. Getting the cooking time right is tricky but the Breville Smart Waffle makes adjustments automatically based on moisture content and what's been added in. Plus it has settings to make classic, Belgian, chocolate, and buttermilk waffles.

ChefSteps Joule

ChefSteps' immersion circulator is a smaller, sleeker, and simpler way to sous vide than Anova's Precision Cooker. The Joule is a slim white tube with a single button and light, which makes it a bit easier to clip onto a stock pot. It requires a smartphone or tablet to control it, though; unlike the Anova Precision Cooker, the ChefSteps Joule doesn't have any physical controls besides the power/pairing button.

Char-Broil Digital Electric Smoker

The Char-Broil Digital Electric Smoker keeps meats (or fish or anything else that can be smoked) at a constant temperature for up to eight hours, with an included meat probe for reassurance. Like so many other items on this list, the Char-Broil can be controlled and monitored with a smartphone or tablet.

Nespresso Expert

For those who still want a great-tasting cup of coffee but don't want to fuss too much, the Nespresso Expert makes four sizes of espresso at three temperature settings at the push of a button or tap of an app.

Anova Precision Cooker

Sous vide is the process of sealing food in plastic and submerging it in hot water until it reaches the perfect temperature. It keeps all the juices in the food and makes overcooking virtually impossible. On the surface it sounds fancy and complicated but the Anova Precision Cooker makes it simple.

NuWave Bravo XL Smart Convection Oven

The NuWave Bravo XL Smart Convection Oven is a fit for novice and experienced cooks alike. It has settings for air frying, baking, broiling, roasting, toasting, grilling, dehydrating, reheating, and defrosting and a digital temperature probe turns off the oven when food is done.

Alchema Hard Cider Maker

Made-to-order meads and ciders can be brewed up on a countertop with the Alchema Hard Cider Maker. The accompanying app comes stocked with recipes and monitors fermentation times.

Google Nest Hub Max

Google Nest Hub Max is the perfect kitchen companion. Take calls hands-free, watch cooking tutorials on YouTube, and listen to playlists while you cook.

Barsys Smart Coaster System

No mixology classes are required with the Barsys Smart Coaster System. Set a glass atop it and the accompanying app gives step by step instructions and weighs ingredients.

Yummly Smart Thermometer

The Yummly Smart Thermometer allows for preset programming and remote monitoring of meat, fish, and poultry.

My Experience

I’m PCMag’s home theater and AR/VR expert, and your go-to source of information and recommendations for game consoles and accessories, smart displays, smart glasses, smart speakers, soundbars, TVs, and VR headsets. I’m an ISF-certified TV calibrator and THX-certified home theater technician, I've served as a CES Innovation Awards judge, and while Bandai hasn’t officially certified me, I’m also proficient at building Gundam plastic models up to MG-class. I also enjoy genre fiction writing, and my urban fantasy novel, Alex Norton, Paranormal Technical Support, is currently available on Amazon.

The Technology I Use

Where to start? I have a standard IT-issued Lenovo Thinkpad for writing and editing, supplemented with an iPad Air and an 8Bitdo Retro Keyboard when I want to write on the go. I also have a Lenovo Legion Go as a platform for running Portrait Displays’ Calman software and controlling the Klein K-10A colorimeter, Murideo SIX-G signal generator, and Leo Bodnar 4K Video Signal Lag Tester I use for testing TVs.

For gaming, I use a Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, and a GeForce 5080-equipped MSI gaming laptop. I like collecting retro games as well, and have an Analogue Pocket and a ton of classic consoles and portables. Photography is another interest, and I use a Sony A7 IV when I’m shooting products and events, and a Fujifilm X-Pro3 for my own attempts at visual creativity. And for reading and writing, I’ve become partial to the Kobo Sage for books and the ReMarkable 2 with Type Folio.

When it comes to phones and tablets, I’m pretty platform-agnostic. I use a Google Pixel 8 for my phone and an iPad Air for a tablet. Android, iOS, and iPadOS are all totally fine, but I need a Windows PC. MacOS just isn’t for me.
