So you chose the iPhone 8 over the iPhone X lineup. Maybe you're not ready to say farewell to the home button and Touch ID, or you're not in love with the idea of a notch. Perhaps you just want to save some cash.

Whatever your reason, the iPhone 8 does have glass on the front and back, so you'll want to keep it safe from dents, scratches, and falls. Use the money you saved by not buying a $1,000+ phone to get a case.

The iPhone 8 is pretty much the same size as iPhone 7; it's slightly larger—0.01 inches taller, wider, and deeper, to be exact, so you can probably squeeze it into an iPhone 7 case. But since you have a new phone, you should also get a new case. The iPhone 8 supports wireless charging via the Qi standard, but it allows for charging through cases up to 3mm thick. Read on for our top picks.

Case-Mate Compact Mirror

Carrying cards? Checking yourself out? The Case-Mate Compact Mirror has got you either way. A magnetic closure gives you quick access to up to four cards and a check before snapping selfies.

Don't listen to TLC, if you want to chase waterfalls, go right ahead with the Case-Mate Glow Waterfall, which sparkles in the light and glows in the dark.

Case-Mate Luminescent

You must be a lucky star if you've scored the Case-Mate Luminescent. The availability of this beauty keeps changing, but if you do get one, you'll have dual-layer protection and a case that lights up day or night.

If more is more for you, try the Hitcase Crio. You can add a wide, superwide, or macro lens to it as well as a car and wall mount.

Nomad Leather

Constructed of Horween leather, this Nomad case sports raised edges and a polycarbonate frame work to ensure your phone lasts long enough to wear it to a beautiful patina.

Whatever you're into, the Lifeproof Next prevents it from getting into your phone. The Next blocks water, snow, dirt, and dust from ruining your phone and of course protects it from your own clumsiness, too.

Case-Mate Folio Wristlet

Forget your wallet—in a good way—with the Case-Mate Folio Wristlet. There's plenty of room for cards and cash and your phone snaps right in. It also props up your phone nicely for watching shows and movies.

Peel Super Thin

Looking for the least bulky, most lightweight case around? That would be the Peel. It comes in seven colors that are all designed to blend with the shades of the iPhone 8.

OtterBox Symmetry

OtterBox cases are generally about safety more than style, but the OtterBox Symmetry takes both into account. The series of cases has playful patterns but still gives your iPhone the protection you expect.

Vena vLove

The Vena vLove is the perfect case if you truly love your iPhone 8. It has a heart cutout for the Apple logo and extra shock protection at the corners.

My Experience

My title is Senior Features Writer, which is a license to write about absolutely anything if I can connect it to technology (I can). I’ve been at PCMag since 2011 and have covered the surveillance state, vaccination cards, ghost guns, voting, ISIS, art, fashion, film, design, gender bias, and more. You might have seen me on TV talking about these topics or heard me on your commute home on the radio or a podcast. Or maybe you’ve just seen my Bernie meme

I strive to explain topics that you might come across in the news but not fully understand, such as NFTs and meme stocks. I’ve had the pleasure of talking tech with Jeff Goldblum, Ang Lee, and other celebrities who have brought a different perspective to it. I put great care into writing gift guides and am always touched by the notes I get from people who’ve used them to choose presents that have been well-received. Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.

Outside of PCMag, I write fiction, poetry, humor, and essays on culture.

My Areas of Expertise

  • Making incomprehensible tech news easy to understand
  • Expanding the boundaries of topics covered in the industry
  • Figuring out tips and tricks in apps and on devices and letting you know about them
  • Putting together gift guides for everyone in your life

The Technology I Use

All that gadgets is gold for me: my iPhone 11 Pro, my fifth-generation iPad that I use only for streaming videos and music, my iPad mini 4 that I like to take with me whenever I carry a bag that can fit it, and my MacBook Pro. Why are they all different shades of gold, though? What’s going on, Apple?

None of them quite live up to my two past loves: my LG Lotus LX600 phone and my Sony Walkman NW-E005 MP3 player.

I've never given up wired earbuds so I was ahead of all those trend pieces. I use a Mangotek Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone jack adapter to connect them to my phone.

I have had so many ebook readers, but I prefer paper to them all. Still, my Kindle Paperwhite is perfect for traveling or when I’m too impatient to wait for a book to be released in paperback.
