Surface, Just Smaller

Think of the new Surface Go as a Surface Pro left in the dryer too long, or hit by a shrink ray. Expect the same feel as the larger flagship device, with everything just smaller.

Portability First

The tablet portion of the Surface Go measures 0.33 by 9.6 by 6.98 inches (HWD) and weighs just 1.15 pounds.

Best-in-Class Kickstand

Plenty of Windows tablets have sought to emulate it, but the stiff "friction hinge" kickstand is a major feature that makes the Surface tablets so versatile.

Display Details

The display measures 10 inches diagonally, and bears an 1,800-by-1,200-pixel native resolution. (That's a 3:2 aspect ratio with 217 pixels per inch.)

Not Quite a Lapful

The Surface Go's narrower body and kickstand mean you have to keep your legs pretty close together, or else the device will fall between them.

Tight Keyboard

The keyboard, sold separately, is a little cramped to type on, but the keys are backlit and deliver satisfying action.

Type Cover Options

If you are going to make the jump and purchase a keyboard for your Surface Go, Microsoft offers a few options. The more premium choice is the $129 Surface Go Signature Type Cover, which comes in the platinum, burgundy, and cobalt options shown here. (The ordinary $99 Type Cover comes just in black.)

Surface Dock

Through the proprietary Surface dock connector, the Surface Go can do video output to an external display (up to 4K) for serious desktop work.

Education Potential

Microsoft showed me some examples of educational applications that may be employed in the classroom. This included an app that teaches Mandarin; you trace the characters with the Surface Pen.

Augmented Reality

Other potential classroom uses include augmented reality using the cameras.

Surface Pen

The same Surface Pen that's available for other Surface products will work on the Surface Go, and it can attach to the flank of the tablet magnetically.

Dual Cameras

You'll find cameras on both the front and the rear of the Surface Go, though you can see it's still hard not to look silly taking photos with a tablet.

My Experience

I’ve been a consumer PC expert at PCMag for 10 years, and I love PC gaming. I've played games on my computer for as long as I can remember, which eventually (as it does for many) led me to build and upgrade my own desktops to this day. Through my years at PCMag, I've tested and reviewed many, many dozens of laptops and desktops, and I am always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget.

The Technology I Use

The single piece of technology I use the most (by far!) is my self-built desktop. I spend a lot of my time gaming (and now, working) on this system, and I’m likely to continue upgrading it in some form forever. As it relates to my work at PCMag, it’s a vital window into keeping up to date with components, performance, and the latest titles. On the smartphone front, I’m a full-time Android user.

I’m always eyeing my next GPU upgrade, but the consistent part of my gaming setup has been a 165Hz 1440p monitor; I think this remains the sweet spot for the time being. A dual-monitor setup has been essential for work and play; my second screen is either a productivity monitor, playing videos for entertainment, or being used for console gaming, depending on the time of day.

Speaking of which, I may be primarily a PC gamer, but (like any good gaming enthusiast without enough discipline) I also own a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series S, a Steam Deck, and a Nintendo Switch 2. The PS5 and Xbox are hooked up to a living-room television for a more laid-back couch experience; I've found Gamepass to be especially handy for cooperative play and for taking my saved-game files from my desk to my couch through the cloud.
