Every once in a while, we see a device with one feature that makes it stand out from the pack. The IPEVO Kaleido R7 Wireless Digital Frame is one such device. The Kaleido R7's sharp display, which can rotate 90 degrees, shows full-screen images in landscape or portrait mode and automatically adjusts the image to match the screen orientation. Portrait orientation isn't revolutionary, but the R7's rotating display is the first of its kind to pass through the PCMag Labs. You'll pay a premium for this feature, however: $199.99 (direct). What's more, though good, the device would need improvement in some key areas to truly justify its high price.
Aesthetics plays a big role in choosing any consumer device but is almost paramount in picking a photo frame. The Kaleido R7 is attractive but may be a better fit in a home with modern décor. The base has a glossy black top and polished white sides. A black monolith that rises up from the back of the base serves as the mount for the pivoting screen. Viewed from the front, no ports, vents, or physical controls disturb the glassy surfaces.
Overall, the device measures 6.7 by 7.8 by 2.9 inches (HWD). The widest parts of the frame's black bezel, its sides, measure 0.9 inch—significantly more than the sides of the Sony VAIO Wi-Fi Photo Frame (VGF-CP1) (0.5 inches) but less than those of the 1.1-inch PF Digital eStarling Impact8 Connected Wireless Digital Photo Frame. The eStarling's wider bezel accommodates its touch-sensitive control buttons. The Kaleido R7 arrays its touch-sensitive buttons across the front of the base.
