Amazon's Echo devices rely on a good internet access. Now Amazon owns a Wi-Fi mesh networking company, meaning future Echo devices could double as access points.

Late yesterday, Amazon announced that it had acquired the company Eero, and with it, grabbed control of a Wi-Fi mesh network solution to blanket every room in a home with reliable wireless connectivity.

The combination of a 4.6-star product rating on Amazon.com, a setup process that only takes 10 minutes, built-in parental controls, automatic updates from the cloud, and the fact Echo devices only work properly with a reliable internet connection, made Eero an obvious buy for Amazon.

Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services, commented, "We are incredibly impressed with the eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work. We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we're committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers."

Eero's existing product line-up consists of an Eero base station, which replaces your wireless router, and then beacons, which plug into a power outlet and extend the range of the network to other areas of your home. Mesh networks are easier and more seamless to use than Wi-Fi range extenders, mainly because it's just one network for your entire home, which is preferable.

With the acquisition now confirmed, the next question to ask is, what will Amazon do with Eero? Initially, probably nothing. Any part of Eero's infrastructure not running on Amazon Web Services will be migrated while the existing products continue to be sold. However, I'd be surprised if Amazon didn't decide in future to integrate Eero's mesh networking with Echo devices somehow. Ultimately, future Echo devices are going to double as Eero beacons, aren't they?
