One of my life's great passions is reading. I love physical books and like purchasing reads at my local independent bookstore, but I equally enjoy curling up with an ereader. To me, one of the coolest aspects of owning an ereader is that I can accessorize it in a variety of different ways, with cases, sticker packs, charms, and more.

I've reviewed ereading technology throughout my career. Below I've curated a collection of gifts that include devices, services, and accessories that should delight any bookworm, no matter their age. A number of these picks have won our esteemed Editors' Choice award.

If this list isn't quite right for you or your intended recipient, we have plenty more holiday gift guides to explore, including great lists if you're on a budget or you're ready to splurge.

A Wonderful Black-and-White Ereader

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2024)

4.5 Outstanding

The Paperwhite is portable, fast, and has enough storage to hold your entire library. Its monochrome display is sharp and looks just as good under the sun as it does under lamplight. It provides excellent front light, in both warm and cool tones, which gives you the option of reading in bed without disturbing the person next to you. Additionally, it's fully waterproof, making it an ideal companion for bath time.

For Audiobook Lovers

Audible Subscription

An Audible audiobook subscription goes a long way. The Plus plan costs $7.95 per month and gives you access to an unlimited number of titles in its Plus catalog. The Premium Plus membership is $14.95 per month and provides all of the benefits of the Plus membership, as well as one credit per month to purchase any audiobook in the entire collection, which you can keep even if you later cancel the membership.

Ebooks and Audiobooks for Kobo Readers

Kobo Plus Read and Listen Subscription

Like Amazon, Kobo offers an ebook and audiobook library for its users. If you have a Kobo owner on your list, then a subscription to its Read and Listen plan is a perfect gift. For $9.99 monthly, users get access to 1.5 million Kobo ebooks and 150,000 audiobooks. You can purchase either the book or audiobook portion separately for $7.99 each a month, but the combined plan is a better overall value.

My Experience

I’m a mobile writer at PCMag, which means I cover wireless phones, plans, tablets, ereaders, and a whole lot more. I’ve written countless reviews and have appeared in numerous videos discussing the latest technology. I’ve always loved it and have been forming opinions on consumer electronics since childhood. Prior to joining PCMag, I covered TVs and home entertainment at CNET, served as the tech and electronics reviews fellow at Insider, and began my career by writing laptop reviews as an intern at Tom's Hardware. I am also a professional actor with credits in film, television, and theater, and membership in both SAG-AFTRA and Actors' Equity Association.

The Technology I Use

I’ve been an Apple fan for a long time. I use an iPhone 14 Pro, and I don’t plan to upgrade any time soon. I like to hold on to my phones for a few years. Maybe I'll upgrade if Apple sells a flip phone.

I use two different Apple computers in my daily life. I recently bought a maxed-out 15-inch MacBook Air for work and other activities. Despite my brand-new computer, I can’t quit using my 2012 MacBook Pro. It still works flawlessly and houses my large collection of ebooks. When traveling, I often use my 10.5-inch iPad Pro and Logitech keyboard case for streaming television and light internet use.

But my favorite piece of tech is my Kindle Paperwhite. I use it every day and it comes with me wherever I go. I read both physical and digital books, but the Paperwhite is currently my favorite ereader.
