One day, photographic film and analog cameras will be found only on antique shop shelves and gathering dust in former hipsters' basements. But until then, digitizing images remains a time-consuming and often expensive task.

Which is why Epson introduced the FastFoto FF-640 high-speed scanning system, aimed at folks still working through shoeboxes full of snaps from weddings, graduations, and Bar Mitzvahs.

An alternative to flatbed scanners and third-party services, FastFoto can scan one photo per second, while also restoring images to their original color, reducing red-eye, and auto enhancing features. It also makes it easy to share the finished product via the cloud and on social networks.

Simply drop up to 30 snapshots into the auto feeder and watch as the machine captures the front and back in a single pass and spits them out again. Epson's software saves each scan to a dedicated hard drive, and then organizes them into collections via recognizable titles, searchable metadata, and capture data that corresponds to when the image was taken.

"In the US today, there are billions of un-scanned photos, and every year countless photos are lost to fires, floods and other natural disasters, making it important to protect and preserve your family's memories," Mike Isgrig, vice president of North America consumer sales and marketing at Epson, said in a statement.

The same goes for children's artwork, bills and invoices, and other home or business documents. The FastFoto sends pages to an email or online storage account (Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive), or any folder on your PC.

Compatible with Windows and Mac OS, the Epson FastFoto FF-640 is available now at brick-and-mortar retailers and online for $649.99.
