Pros & Cons

    • Gives most beers a creamy draft-like head.
    • No CO2 required.
    • Easy to maintain.
    • Pricey.
    • Doesn't work with certain brew types.
    • Can be a bit messy.

There's nothing like the taste of a fresh draft beer, but unless you have a kegerator system at home, you'll have to venture out to your local bar or restaurant to enjoy a nice foamy glass of suds freshly drawn from the tap. Or you can plunk down $169.99 for the Fizzics Beer System, a battery-powered beer dispenser that delivers a respectable tavern-fresh pour without the use of CO2 or nitrogen. The Fizzics dispenser accepts cans, bottles, and growlers, and is very easy to use and maintain. It claims to make store-bought beer taste and look better, and in most cases it does just that, but there are certain types of beer that should remain hand-poured for maximum flavor and presentation.

Design and Features
The Fizzics£221.19 at Amazon UK dispenser is a cool-looking appliance that will jazz up any bar or kitchen countertop. It consists of a black canister, a silver snap-on top with sealing gaskets, and a silver stand with a black anti-microbial rubber drip mat. It measures 15.2 by 6.7 by 11 inches (HWD) and weighs a little over 3 pounds. A slender pouring lever at the top adds another 3.2 inches to the total height. The canister can accept any size can or bottle, and can hold growler bottles up to 64 ounces. There's plenty of room to pack ice around the growler to keep your beer cold for up to 48 hours.

The interior of the hinged top contains a small motorized pump mechanism powered by four AA batteries (included). The top opens backward to provide access to the canister's interior where you'll find a 12-inch rubber tube connected to the pump's intake port. A 1-inch delivery tube connected to the motor's outflow juts out from the front lip of the top. You're not supposed to pour beer into the canister; instead, place the bottle, can, or growler into the canister and insert the tube into the beer. When you snap the top shut it seals the canister. You're now ready to pour.

To pour a beer, pull the lever forward and tilt your glass into the outflow tube as if it were a beer tap. When the beer is around three quarters full, push the lever backward to finish it off with a thick, creamy head. According to the folks at Fizzics, the dispenser uses scientifically engineered fluid and gas technology to produce a draft-worthy head. They also claim that this technology helps to enhance the aroma and taste by releasing the esters (fruity flavors developed during fermentation) in the beer.

To clean the Fizzics, simply fill a glass with warm water and run it through the dispenser to rinse the tubes. You can also remove the drip mat and the canister bucket to give them a warm water washing. It's worth noting that the company strongly suggests that you use the Fizzics system for pouring beer only, as it is not designed for other types of beverages.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
