D-Link mydlink Wi-Fi Smart Plug Specs

Product Category Smart Home

The mydlink Wi-Fi Smart Plug ($49.99), D-Link's first official connected home device, lets you control lamps, coffee makers, and other small electrical appliances from anywhere using your smartphone or tablet. Like Belkin's WeMo Insight Switch, the D-Link Smart Plug is an easy-to-install, app-controlled Wi-Fi switch with scheduling and power tracking capabilities. But unlike the Insight, it lacks some key features, including support for If This Then That (IFTTT) recipes and power cost estimates.

Design and Apps

Measuring 3.4 by 2.4 by 1.4 inches (HWD), the Smart Plug is considerably larger than the Insight, but doesn't block the lower socket of a two-socket power outlet. However, you may have trouble getting it to fit into a tight space, such as an outlet positioned directly below a kitchen cabinet. The plug is white and has a single three-pronged outlet on its face, along with a manual On/Off switch and a Wi-Fi status indicator that blinks orange during setup and glows a steady green when it is connected to your router. A Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button is mounted on the left side of the plug.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
