Smartwatches continue to rise in popularity, and with the help of the Apple Watch's yearly release, there's now more than enough options to choice from.

With more affordable options on the market, and plenty of new innovation, there's never been a better time to invest in a smartwatch.

Apple and Samsung dominate a good portion of sales, but there's also the likes of Fitbit and Garmin throwing their hats into the ring at the moment.

Whether you're after something more affordable, or the absolute best piece of tech going, we're here to assist in your search. Here are all the best smartwatch deals in 2019.

Apple Watch Series 5

Apple Watch Series 5-02

A surprise announcement in the recent Apple event in September, the Apple Watch Series 5 offers further innovation on top of what the Series 4 already provided.

This welcome addition to the Apple Watch family is the first to come with a always-on Retina display that has been built-into a bezel-less Retina display.

The Apple Watch continues to be one the best in its class of smartwatch, and if you're looking for top-of-the-line, you can't go wrong here.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Fitness Tracking

Quite remarkably, the Galaxy Watch is unique because of its conventional watch design.

The Galaxy Watch features a great four-day battery life and a satifying rotating bezel that can also be used to control the on-board UI.

Fast, slick, and clean, the Tizen OS is impressive, but does lack some third-party support.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2

Display

Quite clearly a revamped version of the Galaxy Watch Active, the Active2 released only half a year after the original.

It did bring with it a number of quality of life improvements that make the Watch Active2 much more satisfying to use in your everyday. A standout upgrade is the new digital rotating bezel that allows you to scroll through apps at pace, with haptic feedback.

This fitness focused watch sports a sleek design and innovative features, and is well worth your consideration.

Fitbit Ionic

Fitbit Ionic

Taking on the Apple Watch can be a difficult task, but Fitbit has created a robust and unique smartwatch that continues to specialise in fitness assistance.

It's comfortable, affordable, and can run for an average of four days. Its internal memory can store around 300 songs, eliminating the need for you to carry around your phone.

Best Deals

Fitbit Versa Lite

The Fitbit Versa Lite is an affordable entry-level smartwatch that provides everything beginners need to start monitoring their health and improving their fitness routines.

The Versa Lite is a simpler version of the regular Fitbit Versa, and suits those who aren't looking for the most advanced wearable tech.

This affordable smartwatch is a good entry-level device that still provides plenty of fitness apps, alongside a big four-day battery life.

There is not as much innovative advancements in the Versa Lite, but it's a great option for anyone considering an upgrade.

Garmin Forerunner

Wrist

The affordability and simplicity of the Garmin Forerunner are its best qualities. This isn't a bad thing, and the device should be praised for performing where it needs to.

For only £100, the Forerunner 35 features a heart rate sensor, 9-days of battery life, and dedicated fitness assistance with Garmin Connect.

This is another entry level device that isn't trying to take on the leaders in the market, but is still worth consideration if you're on a budget.

My Experience

I’ve been freelancing as a tech journalist for several years now, after long wanting to write about my passion for video games. I have bylines on Kotaku and other sites, but PCMag is where you can find most of my musings on gaming, its culture, and where the industry is going next. I also test online services for both businesses and individuals. If you’re interested in hearing me talk about entertainment, film, and TV, you can check out my Patreon and Substack, both under the name “Robby Knows.”

The Technology I Use

Most of the tech I use every day is within the Apple ecosystem. Currently, I rely on a 2025 MacBook Air for computing and dabble in art projects on my 6th-generation iPad Mini. I don't go anywhere without my AirPods Pro 2 in my pocket.

As an avid gamer, you better believe that I always have a controller in my hands if I’m not watching movies or TV. I use my PS5 and Switch 2 equally, depending on what’s the hot new release, and am always trying to find interesting ways to tinker with my Steam Deck.

Given the current state of social media and technology, I find myself going more analog to escape the noise. I have a modest collection of watches, both automatic and digital, to free myself from the pings and notifications of the modern world. I also put my phone in a ySky lockbox for 12 hours every night to reduce my screen time. I spent a lot of the past year trying to read good books rather than scroll through feeds.
