Samsung Is Building a $17B Semiconductor Factory in Taylor, Texas

The new facility is expected to be operational in 2024 and will create over 2,000 jobs.

Texas is proving very popular with semiconductor manufacturers lately, and Samsung has just announced it's set to build a $17 billion facility there.

The semiconductor manufacturing facility is to be located in Taylor, Texas and will focus on the production of components for mobile, 5G, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence. Samsung expects to break ground on the new site in the first half of 2022 and aims to have it fully operational in the second half of 2024. Once complete, over 2,000 jobs will be created at the facility as well as "thousands of related jobs."

Kinam Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO, Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division, said:

"In addition to our partners in Texas, we are grateful to the Biden Administration for creating an environment that supports companies like Samsung as we work to expand leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. We also thank the administration and Congress for their bipartisan support to swiftly enact federal incentives for domestic chip production and innovation."

Samsung's decision to build in Texas came down to a number of factors including "the local semiconductor ecosystem, infrastructure stability, local government support and community development opportunities." But Samsung's existing manufacturing facility just down the road in Austin also helped.

This news follows Texas Instrument's announcement last week that it was set to build a new chip plant in Sherman, Texas for 300mm semiconductor wafer fabrication. TI expects to invest up to $30 billion in the project and create 3,000 new jobs.
