Despite Volkswagen's recent emissions scandal, it's a great time to buy a diesel-powered car. For the first time in years, diesel prices are on par with regular unleaded gasoline, making the switch to the high-mpg fuel much more compelling. These savings are compounded at the pump when filling up a large and heavy luxury SUV, which is what's led Land Rover to add two new diesel Range Rover Td6 models to its lineup. The turbo-diesel engine in the Range Rover Sport HSE Td6 is rated at 25 miles per gallon combined—a 32-percent improvement over the supercharged V6 gasoline engine—and can get as high as 28 mpg on the highway. In addition, a new All-Terrain Progress Control gives the vehicle an almost autonomous ability to take on even the toughest trails. That said, the InControl App infotainment add-on falls short of the competition, and the diesel pedigree comes at a very high price.

How Much?
The 2016 Range Rover Td6 comes in two trim levels: the Sport Td6 that starts at $66,450, and the Td6 at $86,450. The Sport HSE Td6 we tested has a base price of $71,450 and $13,615 in options. Add in a $994 Inland Transportation charge, and the total sticker price comes to $86,060.

You also get Bluetooth for phone and music, navigation, an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with CD, AM/FM HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, USB and aux jacks, and Land Rover's new InControl Apps and InControl telematics systems.
