Polestar 4 Swaps the Back Window for a Screen, Starts at $54,900

A high-definition camera feed replaces clear glass in the back, as well as the rearview mirror, in the boutique brand's third EV, which is set to go on order in April for late-2024 deliveries.

NEW YORK—The Polestar 4 debuted at the New York International Auto Show here with a starting price of $54,900 for the North American market on the long-range single motor model. The long-range dual motor trim starts at $62,900.

Polestar had already divulged many details about its electric SUV, including its 300-mile EPA estimated range, but it kept the final price under wraps until today. With that revealed, Polestar will start taking orders in late April 2024 with the first customer deliveries in the fourth quarter. The higher-end Polestar 3 ($73,400) precedes it and will go out to customers in the summer.

The Polestar 4 is "positioned between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price," Polestar says. By the end of 2024, the brand's lineup will have tripled in size, going from one to three vehicles.

2024 Polestar Lineup

  • Polestar 2: Currently available, $49,900 starting, 320-mile range
  • Polestar 3: Deliveries begin summer 2024, $73,400 starting, 315-mile range
  • Polestar 4: Deliveries begin the fourth quarter of 2024, $54,900 starting, 300-mile range (EPA-estimated, not yet final)

The Polestar 4 made its global debut at the Shanghai Auto Show, a fitting locale for its Chinese owner, Geely, though Polestar's headquarters is in Sweden. Sales are already underway in Europe and Australia as of January 2024.

One of the Polestar 4's standout features is the high-definition screen instead of a rear window. It shows a "real-time feed from a roof-mounted rear camera, enabling a far wider field of view compared to what is found in most modern vehicles," Polestar says. The rearview mirror also displays a camera image.

Up front, a 15.4-inch dash screen runs on Android Automotive OS with the Google built-in display. “Google is one of our most important technology partners," Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told PCMag at CES 2024. He does not believe OEMs such as Polestar can compete with tech giants like Google on dash software, despite automakers' best efforts in recent years.

To help preserve electric range, Polestar equipped the SUV with a heat pump and designed it to have an aerodynamic exterior "with a low nose, retractable door handles, flush glazing with frameless windows, rear aero blades, and airflow optimization around the rear light bar," Polestar says.

It's also the fastest-accelerating Polestar in the lineup, going from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds with a maximum of 544 horsepower on the pricier dual motor trims.
