Mercedes-Benz is preparing to unleash its latest electric vehicle, an SUV follow-up to the EQS 450+ sedan.
The EQS SUV gets an estimated range of 333 to 410 miles for the base model. That range is reduced to between 315 and 380 miles for the upgraded models with all-wheel drive.
Mercedes estimates 15 minutes of DC fast-charging can give the SUV up to another 155 miles of range, and just 31 minutes of that same charging to go from a 10% charge back to 80%. US models won’t get to charge as fast on AC power as their European counterparts, though. The US model only supports 9.6kW AC charging with the onboard charger, which will take 11.5 hours to fully recharge while the European model has either 11kW standard or 22kW optional charging that can reduce charging time to 10 or 5 hours, respectively.
Mercedes is offering an optional Hyperscreen, as seen in the EQS sedan, with three displays under a single panel of glass that stretches out between A columns. It’s designed to display the most important information and apps so drivers don't have to go through any menu layers.
The SUV will support over-the-air updates to add features, such as “Trailer Manoeuvring Assist” or Mercedes’ Augmented Reality Navigation. (Its mind-control tech doesn’t appear to be on the table.) The vehicle supports the "Mercedes me Charge" network and onboard navigation can plan routes around charging needs.
The SUV can seat up to seven passengers inside its “avante-garde, luxurious interior,” Mercedes says. Air quality is controlled with a HEPA filter on the intake; activated carbon absorbs odors.
This EQS SUV will be built at the company’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant, CNBC reports, and will launch in the second half of the year. The company claims the new model is produced in a "carbon-neutral way" and is part of its plan to be CO₂-neutral by 2039.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the sedan version starts at just above $100,000.
